You play Sanjuro Makabe, a Mobile Combat Armor (MCA) pilot and Commander in the UCA Security Force. The UCA was originally formed by three dominant megacorporations (Andra Biomechanics, Armacham Technology Corporation, and Shogo Industries). Originally intended as a joint venture that would ensure the continued profitability of the three organizations that founded it, the UCA is now independent, and the dominant military power in existence.
Your mission is to locate and assassinate a rebel leader known only as Gabriel. All of the action takes place either on the planet Cronus or on the spaceship Leviathan. The Leviathan is the flagship of the UCA and is commanded by Admiral Akkaraju. Cronus is the only known source of the biologically active material known as Kato, an incredibly powerful energy source essential to the process by which interstellar travel is possible.
Your deadly enemy is The Fallen, a fanatical terrorist group lead by the mysterious Gabriel, threatens the balance of power on Cronus, and ultimately, control of Kato. You will fight them on your feet or from within one of the different types of Mobile Combat Armor, a giant mech which can run, duck, strafe, swim or transform into an ultrafast hovertank.
You will know the true power of giant robots!
Anime-influenced graphics and gameplay design
Fight on foot or pilot a giant mech in both open and urban environments
An interesting storyline with two possible endings
This game is simply awesome. Which other FPS gives you the ability to play as either human or pilot a mech that was ripped out from a really cool mecha anime? Plus.....when the HELL will this game get a sequel?
Shogo just screams "We had fun making this game! Please enjoy!" It's funny, gory, cheesy, and wonderfully glorious for those exact reasons.
Pros: The dual storylines, fun weapons, good humor, and just a general sense of tongue-in-cheekness (is that a word?).
Cons: Stupid, stupid AI (beat the final boss without him even turning around), cheap deaths, boring levels, and the occasional bug.
Recommended for: Anyone who enjoys anime, or taking the piss out of anime. And retro shooter fans. And people who are possessed.
Special features: Be sure to watch to the end of the credits!
Gameplay wise, this game was a blast. It was also a welcome challenge because enemies can kill you as easily as you can kill them. The sound effects sound like they are ripped directly from an old anime such as Gundam (and they very well may have been). The only thing that really bothered me was the writing. The story was really rushed and missing a lot, and a chunk of it was presented in loading screens, which is definitely not a good way to do it. There was also a scene during the credits that was pretty messed up. Despite that though, this game is definitely worth a play.
