Truly dislike this game

Running back and forth in a new area trying to get the RNG to pop a rando mob to clear it out and...getting low on food. It's when I realize that I am beginning to hate this game. What is the purpose of the food mini-game? There's no challenge to it - go back to cleared out areas and run a circuit to collect food (over and over again). There's no game to it - it's just a tedious task. You never have enough coins/gold/whatever to make food irrelevant. So the red food counter becomes a reminder that an annoyance is coming up: stop having fun, pause your thinking, make a food run, then carry on with the game. The game designers could have just put in a time-out. Having fun? No more playing for 5 minutes then at least you could get up and get something to drink. Nope, just piddle with your mouse and go in that tiresome loop for food. It is one of the most idiotic game designs I have seen in a long time. Fortunately, I got this game on sale. Unfortunately, I will never finish it. The rest of the game is fine but I like myself too much to ever make that food run again. FYI, only made it to level 9 before the boredom smacked me right in the forehead.

Doesn’t hold your hand, it amputates it!

It’s an adequate story with writing that can be described as embarrassing at times, yet surprisingly, it doesn’t dampen the immersion as much as it could as you will soon be engrossed in simply trying to survive and make sense of it all. You start with Character creation… except it really isn’t. You can’t roll stats as each class has predefined statistics, this means for example that if you start your party with two soldiers, those soldiers will be exactly alike, clones if you will. Add in counter-intuitive attribute progression as they level up, and this is an area that could easily have been more than it is. The armour and weapons do not only improve on a linear basis, but may also have a special. Some have extra stunning damage, others will hit more often. Your armour also suffers from this. Those plain gloves make you faster, that shield gives you more energy, etc. There are so many different aspects to equipment, that sometimes a lower level item can be better than a higher one. With six characters, that can equip many slots, the player could be put off by keeping track of this. Combat… what can I say, I’m not a fan of first person combat that is reminiscent of free RPG maker games but it works well enough here. The artwork and feel of the world is absolutely stunning by the way, excellent job here. The game advertises itself as an open world with the freedom to go wherever you want, sure you can, if you want to die quickly. The game is pretty linear but leaves the player to figure out the natural progression from scant clues. For example, in the first town you can do a number of missions, the first three can be taken in sequence, the fourth will kill you if attempt it without first doubling your current party level. How do you do that? Well there are a few hints in-game and you need to figure it outfor yourself. Still, with all its faults, it’s a good game and I don’t regret the purchase, some will love it, some wont.

I'd give it a 4.5/5 if I could

There's plenty of other great reviews that go into the great and not-so-great things about this game, so I'll try to keep this short: -Great things: • Highly variable party design & skill choices • Intuitive, yet deep turn-based combat system • Slick UI and nicely crafted graphic elements / art style • Meaningful inventory and item system • Non-linear exploration is rewarded, worldbuilding and regions well designed • Just-right amount of difficulty -Not-so-great things: • The game heavily rewards min/maxing, and can feel like this is required at times, especially on higher difficulties • Skill, stat and party system is not intuitive, highly recommended to read some guides beforehand or you can screw your party over in the late game without realizing it • Game adds ~20-30 hours of tedium to grind and clear monster areas for that oh-so-precious XP • The "Chance to hit" percentage indiciator does lie to you unless the enemy is stunned. The RNG isn't as terrible as say, Mordheim, but expect to watch 5 characters with 85% to hit all miss in a row on a regular basis (0.0076%) probability yeah right) Despite the faults, I'm having a blast playing this, and is a wonderul "updated" old-school RPG.

Quite enjoyable!

Overall, this game is fun, with few drawbacks. The story is passable, mostly a reason to run around and explore a cool world of diverse environments, treasures, and monsters. The cutscenes were slow; I wished there was a way to just read the text instead of waiting for the voice over to finish. The artwork was nice, though. The best aspect of the game is the many diverse options available in party-building; the player gets to create their own story. The base game doesn't tell you what skills each class has, but I got a bit of a heads-up by reading comments. I started one game, got a taste for the combat, and started a new game with a new party theory and ran with it until the end. The leveling system works well, and the addition of permanent bonuses from all herbs was a nice touch (no useless herbs taking up inventory space). Skill books that you could use right away to improve a skill, without needing to wait to maximize them, was also a nice touch. (Level 30 of a skill costs as much as level 2. Only the first level costs extra.) The "worst" aspect of the game for me was needing to run around areas to trigger ambushes until I'd cleared the monsters. This was tedious, though rewarding. There are enough monsters that you should always be able to fight monsters at your level or weaker; no need to beat your head on a tough mob. Experience gear and the learning skill make this better; I invested in that early on and didn't look back. Gear seems important early in the game, but at the end only the weapons really mattered. My party was level 65-ish for the final boss fight, and the characters were so strong I didn't bother replacing the original experience bonus armor/jewelry I had gotten them. I finished this game, which I don't always do. I didn't encounter bugs, and the puzzles were fairly intuitive. The real fun for me was the party-building and getting to prove out what I was doing on tougher and tougher monster parties. I'm hoping to see a sequel.
