The game starts strong, and I really liked the artwork at first. The drawings are funny and the world seemed fun. But... I'm glad I got the game for free because the asked price (28$CAN) is way too high for what it is.
If you've played Sid Meier's Pirates, you'll see that King of Seas has taken a lot of game mechanics from it, but it doesn't work. There's no in-game help to help you understand stuff you might have missed by skipping a dialog, different damages types aren't explained. For example, each ship's part has 3 values but i've never understood what each did.
Combats are not fun: aiming is really difficult and some fights will drag for a long time, And the rewards weren't good when you sink a ship.
Overall, it's fun for a couple hours but it quickly loses its charm.
So far I played 13hrs and I'm finding the game quite relaxing, its a simple pirate game with trading and ship fighting with special abilities/magic.
The graphics do the job well but like someone else said the character protraits are kinda weird.
The game is really not deep, there's a campaign but I guess you are free to do what ever you want, I'm only like 3 or 4 story mission in so far but I've almost cleared the entire map, I just love sailing and sinking other ships.
I wanted to point out right off that if you are having difficulty with it not saving, you probably did what I did and just downloaded, installed and ran it without using (or having) GOG Galaxy. If you run it from there it will create the save file and work normally. You may need to create the SaveGames folder first—I’m not sure. I did in my struggles to figure it out, but once I learned about it needing GOG Galaxy, it started saving.
Also, there is rudimentary mouse support now, but it is kinda clunky and only works to select items on some menus. This game was clearly designed for consoles, not PCs. That’s not an excuse, just an explanation.
The dialog art is meh. Otherwise, the graphics are good. The gameplay so far has also been good. You can buy any ship you can afford whenever. This may have been limited in earlier versions, but you’re free to pick whichever ship you want now (at least on the easiest level that I’ve been playing on).
I’ve played SM’s Pirates! This is similar, but I wouldn’t overly compare the two. Just on its own merits, this is a reasonably fun game.
Alright, I give this game a 3.5 really. this game is a pretty decent naval combat game. The controls are fine, although it is very obvious that fast ships are very much better than heavy ships. 55000 gold ship you can get is a complete rip off due its slow speed not being worth its armor, although its number of cannons are nice. Being able to out manuver enemy canons is too critical for it to be worth it, especially since the right guns and bullets and level ups can bridge the gap ez. Which is a shame, because Man-O-Wars are awesome on paper, but completely impractical. Add onto the fact that you are a pirate, and thus, probably chasing your prey means you don't wanna be waddling through the sea like a fat dude in a floaty.
Ass you progress through the game, eventually it wants you to collect and manage territory. Thats a well and good concept to have, but to do this you are essentially spawn camping the A.I. While you are attacking the settlements local fort, which has four cannons plus a few optional watch towers (each of which is armed with a cannon that will blow holes in your Man-O-War, which is too slow to avoid said cannons), the town that it is linked to does not stop spawning boats by the boatload.
There are two enemy factions. One spawns ships that arn't immedtialy hostile to you unless you fire on them. They will ignore you attacking their fort, but will go ham if a stray shot goes their way. But the real problem is that they are trying to squeeze passed you through the narrow water ways that connect the town (there is one particular town north east of Kings Fortress that is really bad about this), and while they don't turn hostile for simply bumbing into them, you are essentially trying to dodge artillery fire whilst in a traffic jam on the highway. Hard? Sure. Frustating? definitly. if the blue boys over at Kings Fortress take that settlement, in which case every boat spawning out of that town is immediatly hostile to you. I have more to say but word-
A tad grindy and many of the skills are OP. Otherwise its enjoyable to play cooperatively with my kid. I sail he shoots. Otherwise it can be very grindy and not especially captivating.
