I'm not a fan of the cartoon art style.
The AI is pretty dumb. Get in a fight with a ship, get some distance between them and they will completely forget about you so you can get up close for a heavy blow.
Your inability to leave your ship to do things like dig up treasure is kinda sad.
I think it's worth a purchase if you catch it on sale.
+ Music
+ Controls
+ Procedural Generation
+ Ship to ship combat is fun
- Art style
- Cannot leave your ship
- AI has the memory of a goldfish
Alright, I give this game a 3.5 really. this game is a pretty decent naval combat game. The controls are fine, although it is very obvious that fast ships are very much better than heavy ships. 55000 gold ship you can get is a complete rip off due its slow speed not being worth its armor, although its number of cannons are nice. Being able to out manuver enemy canons is too critical for it to be worth it, especially since the right guns and bullets and level ups can bridge the gap ez. Which is a shame, because Man-O-Wars are awesome on paper, but completely impractical. Add onto the fact that you are a pirate, and thus, probably chasing your prey means you don't wanna be waddling through the sea like a fat dude in a floaty.
Ass you progress through the game, eventually it wants you to collect and manage territory. Thats a well and good concept to have, but to do this you are essentially spawn camping the A.I. While you are attacking the settlements local fort, which has four cannons plus a few optional watch towers (each of which is armed with a cannon that will blow holes in your Man-O-War, which is too slow to avoid said cannons), the town that it is linked to does not stop spawning boats by the boatload.
There are two enemy factions. One spawns ships that arn't immedtialy hostile to you unless you fire on them. They will ignore you attacking their fort, but will go ham if a stray shot goes their way. But the real problem is that they are trying to squeeze passed you through the narrow water ways that connect the town (there is one particular town north east of Kings Fortress that is really bad about this), and while they don't turn hostile for simply bumbing into them, you are essentially trying to dodge artillery fire whilst in a traffic jam on the highway. Hard? Sure. Frustating? definitly. if the blue boys over at Kings Fortress take that settlement, in which case every boat spawning out of that town is immediatly hostile to you. I have more to say but word-
A tad grindy and many of the skills are OP. Otherwise its enjoyable to play cooperatively with my kid. I sail he shoots. Otherwise it can be very grindy and not especially captivating.
What a terrific little pirate game!
The sea is in my blood..... because my uncle was a deck chair attendant. Perhaps that's why I periodically have a strong itch to play a seafaring game. Especially one with sailing ships.
King of Seas scratched that itch really well. A fun tongue in cheek sailing adventure with pirates and loot and the odd bit of giant squid tentacles, man eating sharks and voodoo magic thrown in for good measure.
The only niggle I have so far is the odd design choice of having to find Cartographers dotted around the ocean, in order to expand the map. This function would have been much better as something you buy in port. As it is, visiting a port is not enough to add it to your map, which is a little immersion breaking.
Other than that it's anchors away and a strong recomendation from me.

So the game can be really good, the graphics, the audio, the story and its dialogs make it for a great game but even for free I suggest friends not to play it. This is why:
1.] Repetitive. After like an hour you will start facing the exact same quests.
2.] Difficulty goes way up for normal and you need to grind heavily if you are to progress with the story.
3.] No save between the last mission's checkpoints? That alone turns the review into a negative!
Its a shame. Developers, why no saves at the last mission? I will not spend half an hour again. What were you thinking? And how much time would it take to make a few more quests? Unacceptable guys...
