For me this game is pinnacle of a Bioware's RPG. It feels like KOTOR 2.0. Much more improved. And with focus on asian culture, of course. I love everything about Jade Empire, from combat to morality system. Everyone should at least give it a shot, I'm pretty sure you won't be dissapointed.
Had this for the original Xbox and was tempted to keep it for the 360 despite some compatibility issues but the PC version owns the Xbox version and Special Edition is even better - undoubtedly a MUST BUY game!
The game itself is at least 4 stars, but the framerate appears to be locked quite low, it's poorly-optimized and very sluggish in many places, dropping even below the 30 FPS I presume it's locked to on a GTX 780, and has a slew of new bugs I experienced. It's an incredibly lazy port.
But if you can get over the technical concerns, my criticisms are few. It's a very unique settings, has a great plot, and while the moral choices are still often the sort of "buy the beggar a mansion or stab him" you can't avoid from Bioware, they're contextualized in an interesting way that excuses a lot.
That moral choice system can easily be seen as good vs evil, but is definitely more subtle. The game presents two philosophies. One is very Ayn Rand/Nietzche - the closed fist. Its adherents believe that being soft and generous with people only makes them weaker, but by being harsh, you are actually helping them - and you're more important than them, and they should learn to think the same so something something world peace (or something).
Then there's the open palm philosophy which... needs no explaining. It's the take a break from saving the world to find everyone's lost kitten path.
Aside from story, it also has solid combat that is actually difficult (for me at least) on the harder settings.
In short, if you're really interested in it and don't have an Xbox, consider it. If everything doesn't seem awesome to you and/or you still have your Xbox around, just get it for the console.
Look, I love Bioware as much as any of you do, but I think we've got way too many 5 star reviews just being put up constantly on here.
Jade Empire is one of those overrated games.
I loved this game when it came out, and I've played it twice, it is by all accounts unique, well paced enough, and like-able.
But the story is not up to standard with other RPGs, even other Bioware RPGs.
Furthermore I believe 3/5 stars is a GOOD score and GOOD games deserved to be played (even multiple times).
Thank You GOG for bringing this here, I will be playing it again and enjoying this game.
PS: Tea house music ftw!
