Ultherst was once a peaceful, God-fearing land until the Three Scourges of God came to pass as foretold by Saint Ezekiel, one of the twelve followers of the First Prophet. First came the famine that devasted the populace. Next came the plague that added more unfortunate souls on Death’s abacus. Finally came the great rain of fire, and death fell down on sinner and innocent alike, blood flooding the streets in place of water. The people, in their desperation, turned away from the Holy Mother Church and delved deep into pagan decadence or succumbed to the temptation of the Devil. You have been charged with the office of Inquisitor. It is up to you to investigate crimes against the one true faith and root out heresy--using any and all means necessary. As in all best computer RPGs--the most important choices are yours to make.
Inquisitor is a unique blend of action-oriented combat with a deep and involving tale of betrayal, torture, madness, and infernal damnation. This is exceedingly difficult and punishing for no payoff. I can't see how you are intended to succeed in nearly any combat encounter when stamina doesn't recover while walking, and getting hit as well as attempting to hit drain stamina. Melee combat is effectively a death sentence. Ranged combat is expensive and gold is very scarce, so having attacks miss is throwing away significant amounts of gold, and you will miss often. This is a game I wholy cannot recommend anyone play.
This game rewards you with a real sense of achievement when you make progress. It's non-linear, and will take a fair bit of exploration and detective-work to proceed with the story. But that is what makes a good RPG! The difficulty of this game and the fact that it doesn't hold your hand through the story make it more immersive and more rewarding. Definitely reccomend
I can't seem to post my review here because apparently it is too long, so I posted it on the GOG forum instead. You can find it here:

This game spent almost a decade being produced. Its story promised to be outspoken, with spectacular gameplay, meaningful choices, and a unique setting.
Sadly, it didn't pan out. This game is filled with bugs, bland dialogue, and a boring setting. The question I asked myself when playing this game? Of all the games I could be playing right now, why this one?
In the end, the dialogue sounds like it's being forced through the same conspiracy meat-grinder. The gameplay is laborious and the setting is merely a background.
Before you purchase this game, be aware that you are in for the long haul and will be left scratching your head asking, "Why did this game get so many awards?"
Pretty rough experience but totally worth your time.
The closest resemblance here could be Divine Divinity - lot of mobs to whack but beside it - it's like RPG.
No level scaling and hand holding or quest compass, already like it.
Difficulty setting is deceiving. On Easy enemies die faster and you get more XP, but on Hard you get more gold and loot, plus your companion
(you NEED to have him if you're Priest) get better stats. And you get less XP but enemies respawn here so it shouldn't be a big deal in the end...
Don't invest into Identify skill, it does not work.
I recommend playing as a Priest, other classes will have bad time later in the game (like they don't have it from the start).
That's because the higher level spells are more than useful, the dirty job will be done by your companion.
There is no offensive starting spells (they are here but they don't work), you need to rely on magic seals and your companion.
BTW. prepare for massive potions consumption.
Beside combat it become nice RPG, with nice written NPCs, plot, story and investigations.
Good witch hunting, fellow inquisitors!
