Still own original

I have to admit from the beginning that I am completely biased. I have played every single title in the storied Heroes series (including Chronicles and the poorly executed VII). Never finished I, II, or VII. I have completed III, IV, V, and VI. While III is generally considered the quentissential volume, I argue that V is better for the reason that it has an actual story line that is carried through all the scenarios. Whereas with III, the end of each scenario is the end of that story line. That's why they were able to take III and make Chronicles. 10 scenarios with the same characters that have nothing to do with each other. You still get the goodness of the building (added to), and the battles...and in the latter stages, they can become epic. If you've never played (hard to imagine) one of these titles, I'd say this is the one to begin with. If you like it, then try III. I'd say steer clear of VI. The story is kind of trite. The battles and building are still good, however.

Good, but not Great

This game automatically gains a number of points because it brings back HoMM - so its awesome for just doing that. The game translates the HoMM style game play into a pretty 3d format wonderfully well, and you can really tell that the Devs put a lot of effort into capturing the magic of the old HoMM games because it remains as fun and addictive as it always was. The only fly in the ointment is the storyline is fairly box standard fantasy fare, and the characters are fairly forgettable. It isn't really a negative but it is something you should be aware of when purchasing, if you are expecting an "epic, amazing storyline" with "deep, well written and involved characters" you are going to be disappointed. The storyline is decent, and the characters play the parts they are all supposed to. But the story and characters are definately not where this game shines. Perhaps this is an artifact of the dev team not being English speakers and thus the English translation and voice acting being laughable in places (the in game "romance" is juvenile and stupid as an example). Don't get me wrong the storyline and characters can certainly be enjoyed for what they are (and what they arent); but it's definately the gameplay all the way for this one.

Not worth it.

I started off playing this series back with number 2, was hooked from then. Loved 3 but never did play 4. But this game, its good on some levels, alot better. But the neutral creatures killed it for me. I always was slow to build up at the start, normally have nothing defending my base. I saw some neutral mob pop up right outside my castle, too strong for me. Though "whatever I get build up and smash it down". A month later my army was nice, that neutral mob was massive, I dont even remember if there was a cap. Got through it fine to see about another 50 neutral guys had spawned, all had 1000s within their armies. In the third one it used to take neutral mobs years to get into the 1000s, yet a month and they were everywhere and very powerful. I couldnt even get anywhere close to anything. One simple thing destroyed the game completely. Simply, if you are a die hard fan, you will probably love it. If you dont like to grind out neutral mobs all night then you will probably hate it.

All HoMM 3 had to offer, and more!

Now, I know this is a controversial opinion, but I think HoMM 5 surpassed all of its predecessors, including HoMM 3, in every way. The storyline is well thought through, rich in narrative and full of plot twists. The heroes are likable and unique, they're not just stats and a profile pic anymore. The creatures are more diverse and all posess some particular abilities, many unique. The towns are lovingly crafted, the 3d and the possibility to move your camera around them makes you feel like you actually enter a city, not a store with buildings lined up on the shelves. You can pick one of 4 skills while levelling, instead of two. To reach some abilities you first have to unlock some very specific skills in the intricate skill tree. Even after years of playing i still find new ones. The entire world is fully 3d, so you can move your camera freely in all angles and directions. The combat system is greatly enhanced, since more unit stacks are allowed onto the battlefield, which also increased in size. You'll notice that the queue of turns is now visible, which makes it possible to create more complex strategies. Each faction plays COMPLETELY differently, and using the same strategy for different ones will result in failure. Overall, the game introduced improvements to all aspects of previous games and brought in some new things, making both the campaign and the multiplayer incredibly fun.

Five to be Alive

Heroes V is a turn-based strategy game, within the "board game-esk" franchise, known for strategic planning and mathematical calculations. If you have played any of the franchise, original, second third forth, sixth seventh? - There's no surprises, it is at its core "the same game". However, its like Grand Theft Auto - Its the same missions, different intro, ending and layout. but its the same game at heart, with the same formula. Heroes V I wont compare in this review to prior games, as someone who went from 3 and 4 to 5, but not really playing the games extensively. I found myself picking this up on sale, for 5 pounds. After I found myself rather enjoying how powerful you could become in Heroes 3 - heroes 4 I vaguely touched, so V no really surprises. The campaign exists, Probably "not worth" going through it. (I do intend to go through at some point myself) the Skirmish is where the game proper shines. VS the a.i. and other players, great - However the a.i. is slow, they take a few seconds to calculate their moves in full and when you have 4 or more players in a match, the times between your moves can seem to really drag. More so within this game. However - the game looks quite nice for a game released over a decade ago - And despite its age and how poor the a.i. speed can be, the game is "well optimized" I have tried running it on my "gaming rig" (cheap I may add) Runs like trying to cook food in an oven, Not on an open fire. Tried running it on a NON gaming laptop - Runs very well, some hiccups, and with the graphics turned back. Still great frame rates. Should you be thinking "I might not be able to run this" because X, Y and Z. - As long as you really have a moderate computer that vaguely matches the specs on the store page? You can run it. I had a early 2000s computer, XP, slow 60gb hard-drive. 64mb graphics card. Ran just as well as a computer with a 100+ quid graphics card, in a computer built last year. I would recommend without questions.
