I never would of thought of this game if not for the deep sale, but it's really good! Plays smooth and looks great on my modest rig (Win 11/Ryzen 7/Radeon Vega X/ 12 G/Logitech controller).
There's not a lot of story here, physics are arcade-y, and car customization is pretty shallow. This ain't Forza or F-1 or Rally. Combat is also pretty basic(not Carmageddon or Twisted Metal, either).
And yet? It's also hella fun. Instantly able to pick up and play, with a deep bag of tricks that will take time to master. Graphics that are sharp, pleasant, and bright without being overwhelming (and without overheating my laptop). Perfect for either single or couch two-person. Works brilliantly with a controller. Many hours of fast-paced, simple-minded fun here to be had.
I would have been pissed about paying full price for this game, but for $4 USD it's a steal, and belongs in every drivers library.
Superb racer. Anyone who played Wipeout XL in the 90's will recognize the soul of a classic here. If not, you'll still see the death-defying spirit of Grand Prix and other high-performance racing styles. The game is a blast, the car customizing feature is a nice touch, and everything about it is pretty to look at. So why did I detract a star?
My wife and son and I all pummeled each other regularly on SuperTuxKart during the pandemic. We loved it, and GRIP would go right in the same slot in our family night activities if only they had bothered to work in a LAN feature. Sure, you can play on split screen, but unless you've got a really large 4K or widescreen display and a GPU capable of running it at a high frame rate (and trust me, for this game you want all the FPS you can get), split screen sucks. And forget racing with three or more.
So if you're OK with solo racing or head-to-head with a pal on a split screen, this is a 5-star reco. Otherwise, I have to dock it.
Got it for like 5 bucks on sale. Really enjoyed it. Just wish the maps were a bit longer. If you like speeding like a madman and shoot enemy cars, this is it.
