One of the most acclaimed adventure games of all time is now back, better than ever. Grim Fandango's epic story of four years in the life (or death) of Manny Calavera, travel agent to the dead, has been remastered to look, sound, and control even better than when it won GameSpot's Game of the Year award upon its original launch. Grim Fandango still stands as a classic of the genre, with unforgettable characters and unique combination of film noir and Mexican folklore.
Grim Fandango Remastered includes:
Repainted, hi-res character textures
New, dynamic lighting
Classic score re-recorded with a full live orchestra
My Mac doesn't run it, needs to be made compatible with older Mac OSX, I won't install Mavericks again, that terrible OS has deleted 2 external HDDs. Waiting eagerly for a compatible version of this great game.
In short:
It depends if you have played this game when it came out: If yes, then you might enjoy the better controls. If not, don't bother.
I did not play the game on release, I read much about the controls and decided to skip it. When Monkey Island 4 came out with the same controls, I had to play it because it was Monkey Island, what could I do? And even though I liked the game, having no mouse support really really sucked.
So now I decided to give Grim Fandango a chance, it's having mouse support after all, but I just don't have fun. There are too many problems.
For one, there are the screens. I want to compare it to Alone in the Dark or Resident Evil, you can manage it, but it can be distracting. The inventory is zoomed in so that you can't see an item entirely, and since there are no descriptions unless you click examine, it takes time to check everything. Also inventory management takes forever since you always have only one item on screen, and you are clicking left and right constantly to cycle through everything.
The puzzles, oh my god, range from absolutely easy to insane moon logic. And that was the moment (about five hours in) I realized this game is not for people like me. It's for people who enjoyed it when it came out, and just want to revisit old memories, and in that case add 2 more stars.
But there is something positive to be said: The story is interesting, and the voice acting (English) is superb! But that's not enough.
Sadly it's leagues below masterpieces like Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones IV or Monkey Island.
there are better point and click object combining puzzle games from the same time period of the original release of this game, or even before this game even came out...
the puzzles are so insanely simple that anyone with high intelligence can easily get stuck, sounds weird i know but those with higher intelligence get stuck on looking for something more complicated or less 'devious' (probably the best word for it) than most people...
there are game guides/hints aplenty from the original games release for anyone to use, takes a bit of the fun out of playing (not the devs fault obviously) the game but anyone can use them to complete any of the puzzles/challenges if they do get stuck.
there are some nasty bugs/glitches that will instantly and permanently corrupt your save file so you will have to start the game over again (unless you keep 4-6 saves at any given time) most of what is happening is extremely boring and un-inventive (at least for me) and even more uninspired...
the jokes are usually not funny, the game is more based around mexican/spanish lore than it is about the Grim Reaper, and if death was run by a gov. bureau instead of a simple natural form of expiration...
the whole planting thing to kill the dead is stupid...
you may or may not find the game fun, i would suggest getting it on sale only, not sure if i will be able to slog through the rest of the game or not at this point...
(that is my opinion and 2 cents on this game)
I see some one star ratings. They don't have anything to do with the quality of the game but with technical issues. Please guys try to solve these issues in the forum but don't give a low rating for that kind of stuff.
I give 5 stars because I think this is a beautiful remaster of the original (which was already 5 star material) with some very nice extra's.
