When I was in highschool we'd look forward to this game month after month. and then it's released. and i hear nothing but praise. years later i have some free time and pick it up. I couldn't believe how faithless it is to fallout, to rpgs in general. maybe i got older? so i played new vegas and 3 again, and 2 and 1.
i think ive grown older.
(A Modded Playthrough) I was disappointed by how it does not take the story, characters, world, and quests beyond it's simple premise. If you are a fan of RPGs, of great stories, and of deep characters then play the game with the knowledge that Fo4 is more of a shooter, less of an RPG.
That said, I will be doing another playthrough and heavily mod it. One thing you can expect from Bethesda is that the mods are incredible.
This is a narratively driven franchise. Bethesda don't and have never understood that. The plot in the game is by far the weakest in the franchise. Factions motivations and behavior is inconsistent and nonsensical, the story is unoriginal and uses heavily forced writing to hide its plot twists. Your character is not yours; he/she comes with a pre-made backstory that you have no control over.
A shame too, because mechanically it is easily the best game in the franchise. The upgrade and building systems are a good addition, giving purpose and function to the junk you collect, and if you don't like the systems, aside from a few story missions, you can mostly ignore them and just play your way. Even the power armor system, in spite of how abundant the suits are, is quite satisfying. The only part of the gameplay mechanics that is worse is the leveling system and the perk tree, which removes the excellent additions New Vegas made to skills and how they tie in to roleplaying, something that Bethesda have all but axed from the game.
Finally, the world is beautifully built, but terribly designed. There is no sense of direction or pacing, exploring most locations yields little satisfying rewards, enemies are generic and scattered around the map with 0 thought or purpose, and the world looks like the bombs just dropped a few days ago, rather than 200 years.
Overall, Bethesda have crafted a theme park ride with little to no thought put into crafting a believable world with people who act like humans. They wrote a story that makes no sense and gives you only extremely limited control over how it plays out. Great game, terrible story.
