Arm yourself with deadly weapons and confront creatures with highly advanced artificial intelligence; they will plot, wait and ambush you from all sides.
You are about to embark on a new and exciting journey. One that will fill you with a sense of wonder and discovery. Light and sound will mix like a kaleidoscope to thrill you as never before. Don't keep this feeling of nausea to yourself, go Head-to-Head with 2-player modem support or 8-player network and Tournament Mode. Brace yourself for the world of Descent... if you can handle it. Get them before they get you...
Dynamic gameplay that is hard to match even by today’s standards
A great musical score composed by artists such as Type O Negative and Skinny Puppy
This game is a must have for any sci-fi fan, or anyone who claims to be into gaming. It just is fantastic as it presents a well written story, with a situation you can really emmerse yourself into. I really wish another would come out but alas the game industry says this type of game will not sell so no one is willing to make a similar game.
It is the last of its kind, though I wish it was not true. Pick this game up if you want to see what old school gaming was like.
I have fond memories of playing Descent I, Shareware on my 486 PC years ago. I have little experience of Descent 2 but I am told it is every bit as good as the original so I highly recommend buying this package. You can run this old MS-DOS game using the DOSBox DOS emulation software on a modern PC (i.e. XP or Vista) and the DOSBox software is included in this installer.
Alternatively you can go to the website of the Descent Rebirth project (http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/) and download a new Open Source game engine for free, which will allow these two titles to be played without DOSBox on a Windows, Linux or Mac computer. The new engine allows the original game content (instructions are provided for copying the game content from an existing installation) to be played using the modern Open-GL graphics specification allowing stunning resolutions such as 1600x1200 and effects such as Tri-Linear filtering as seen in modern games. A great new look with the same playability of the original game...
The only gripe I have with this package is that the downloaded installer must be run on a Windows system to extract the game files. There is no way to manually unpack the installer EXE file to get at the game content, e.g. to manually install on a Linux system using the Linux port of DOSBox or the "Rebirth" game engine. If you are a Linux-only user you may need to run this installer on a friend's Windows machine so you can archive a copy of the extracted game directories.
I remember this game coming out when the new PowerVR cards came out and Voodoo cards had moved from V1 to V2 editions
The Game had a great review in PCzone and it was a must purchase for me and I drove 30 miles to pick up my copy
I had so much enjoyment out of it, it was different to Doom and Duke Nukem being 3d but also having full flight 360 degree aircraft turning
Now 12 or so years on of course it has aged, but so have old arcade classics like pacman and space invaders, this does not distract away from a good game
The levels are quite complex and the controls after a while become 2nd nature
At the holiday price of 4 dollars you cant really go to wrong so my opinion is Give It a Go and see if you get immersed in the 360 degree world of Descent
8/10
You don't see many games that do real 3D, even today.
The physics is somewhat odd because the ship tends to stop really quickly for no apparent reason but still it's one of the few games that actually does 3D, not some 2D map with jumping around.
