This game is for masochists

Do you love RNG? If yes this game is for you. Be prepared to lose your beloved champions on a whim of a dice. Don't worry it was not your fault it is just RNG. Grind maps endlessly while you develop up your team of elite heroes just to run into a joke fight and start the last 6 hours you played all it over again. If this is not a great way to spend your free time, then go to the forum and read git gud comments from kids. In short: The game is well made, it just wants you to suffer. Doesn't value your time at all as it becomes repetitive with jump back to square 1 dice rolls.

Don't expect mods.

The game officially supports mods, but the GOG and Linux versions have problems running mods, and the developers continue to ignore them. https://www.gog.com/forum/darkest_dungeon/warning_nonsteam_andor_linux_users_second_class_customers_for_devs

So close, yet not able to get there...

Now this game has a lot of things that speaks to me. You have fantasy, horror and TPG elements. You have different dungeons, placement and easy to learn tactics. A bit of base building and quests, new characters. Unfortunately, you have a grind that is silly. You have perma death, which would be OK, but since you sooner or later will lose your favourite characters and the new difficulties won't be able to beat it unless you pump all of your goodies into one prestige, which won't have the other... Yeah, it's a basic damned if you do, damned if you don't set-up and this is called difficult. To me, it simply gets annoying, because like other so called difficult games, in Dark Souls for instance, you could pat yourself on the back after defeating a boss. You could feel achievement for doing the right thing. Here, you know your best characters will require some sex and booze or divine inspired flogging in town to be able to get out in the adventures again. It's fun at first, but then there is just that. Same ol same old. Really a shame cause the feel, the art and presentation of this game nad the basic functions are really interesting, but ultimately. It all feels like a chore and after awhile, why don't I play another game instead?

Before you buy it.

The creator of this game really had in mind to make this game as hard as possible which is fine but it turned into a grind because of it so even thou it has great narration and graphics it becomes tedious and boring. If you like grinding you will be fine but i decided i wont finish this game because I do not find grinding for days to be fun. Hope this helps you decide.

Great but aged game

After 120 hours played, I think I can give a good assessment. Concentrating on the game itself, I'd say that "RPG" tag is rather misleading. This a turn based strategy dungeon crawler, honestly. There's a story going on but it's rather tertiary, you'll spend most of the time grinding in dim dungeons fighting monsters. Gameplay is RNG based and in enemy's favor but with good strategy, sheer will and bit of luck, it's beatable. Classes are balanced so picking a good team is crucial. It's challenging, rage-inducing and that makes every crit, every win so satisfying. All in all, 4/5 in my opinion. I recommend it but to a very specific group that most likely plays PoE hardcore self-found and grinds on Runescape. I knocked down my review because of recent developments. Redhook is stopping support (only most crucial updates will come) for DD on all platforms except Steam. This means you're buying here an aged game that won't get anymore DLCs. I assume this is because of a deal with Epic Games for DD2. I doubt I'll support Redhook in future but in a nutshell I really enjoy playing this game.
