Charming, Powerful, Lots of FUN

wow... this game took me by surprise. I heard great things about it for many years now but only got around to playing this past week. It is a short game (5-10 hours) depending on your speed but that doesn't take away from the amazing characters, music, locations, gameplay, story and all around unique feeling from this gem of an experience. There are challenging parts that require a few tries for beating (of note the race and some sneaking sequences and that final boss battle) so you are not facing an easy run through on your first try. The variety in gameplay is also impressive. Overall its atmosphere and theme is remarkable and not to be missed. Truly a one of a kind game!

Overall Good, Issues Apparent

Upon entering the Beyond Good & Evil I found that I was unable to alt-tab or open task manager, this made screwing around with various settings in order to get most cutscenes to be in sync a much larger nuisance than it already was. Just like in many other adventure games, the camera was the strongest enemy in the game. During stealth sections and battles the camera would constantly fight with my commands and/or not show what I needed to see. The story showed a lot of promise that the beginning, but many facets I wanted it to explore were either dropped early, or took cliche turns. Jade's allies are cute, and conduct themselves much like standard cartoon characters. The game is really showing its age in the graphics department, and the map design seems to be (especially in the overworld) focused on wasting the player's time. Definitely worth the playing, though not to the extent you might have heard.

A Hidden Pearl

I played this in anticipation of Beyond Good and Evil 2, but I have had this game in my backlog for far longer. And what a mistake that was. Beyond Good and Evil is a special kind of game, it involves puzzle solving, stealth, photography, combat, and a great story with a great soundtrack. This game oozes charm, a trait common to some of my absolute favorites. From the character design to the music to the world design, I just feel happy when playing it. A must buy for anyone looking to play a real gem that went under many people's radar, like Psychonauts.

Bright and engaging world to come backto

Everything Anachronox did wrong Beyond Good and Evil does right - the areas, the "dungeons" (they really cannot be called such in this lively and living world), the photocamera mechanic (horribly bugged out in Anachronox, perfect here), even the random spawning enemies JRPGeqsque combat with time slowing attack, the puzzles, and the story - unlike Anachronox, there's no childish 2-cents humor in BGE and over the top inappropriate moments. Hyllys seams alive and living, which the Anachronox universe and writing seems like it came out of that insane clown from the Star Trek series. I had, however to reduce the stars to 4, due to the obligation of racing ( that is if you don't race, you will not be able to progress in the game). That is a major breaking point the developers should have thought about. I'm buying an adventure game, not a racing game, so if you're so inclined - please include stuff (like it was done in the Gamecube Harry Potter series) I don't want to spend more than 10 minutes on the racing part and I absolutely don't want to tediously repeat the tracks (those who played will know what I'm talking about).

Journalistic digging goes beyond

A game where your job is to expose what is going in this part of the world as a photographic journalist with a bit of a violent twist to it. A story that is interesting and makes you want to keep going to find out whats going on. The characters in the game are very well done and they all have their own personalities. The part that can annoy you sometimes is the view you see things at as it can move weirdly sometimes. You can find good information for fixes for the game in the forums with widescreen and so on. I for sure recommend the game and had blast playing it.
