I love these games. but it has two major issues. the first is the spyware / EULA, which is clearly the work of some idiot marketing tool. bad bad move, and they should've known better. the second is harder for them to correct, unfortunately. their engine is incapable of doing the things they're asking of it. constant massive slowdowns even on brand new top of the line hardware. incredible bugs in pathing (ironic!), AI, and interactions with the world. the last game had these issues, but they've gotten even worse in this one, making what should be a great experience a lot more frustrating than it should be. QA on this one seems rushed, and it's a real shame. the game itself is great, but I can't recommend it in good conscience.
This game feels so much like a love letter to Symphony of the Night, and its descendants. There's so many little tributes to that original, as well as touched from other Castlevanias of years past. It doesn't really do anything new, but it picks and chooses all the right elements and is probably the most solid game of this genre in recent years. A delight, and definitely worth your time if you like these kinds of side scrolling exploration action adventures.
So, this is a game made by folks who obviously love the old super punishing games mechanics of the past. personally, I think this is a mistake, but if something is well executed, I can find something to like in striving for goals like this. however, the controls are really not up to the challenges set by the developers. so many areas require split second timing, however, the controls just simply don't respond correctly. I've tried with two different controllers, bluetooth and wired, and so many times the game just leaves you hanging where it doesn't recognize a button press and then punishes you for it. it seems specifically that if you roll the controls from one direction to another, rather than lifting your finger off the d-pad before pressing the next direction, it'll utterly refuse to execute the special move you need to progress, it'll just sit there doing nothing until you die. I can consistently demonstrate this with the wall run / wall dash combo that's used a ton in the later game, where rolling from up to horizontal just simple does not work unless you fully clear the d-pad first. so yeah. unless you enjoy just being frustrated and angry at a game all day long, miss this one. it's a shame, since the rest of it is made with such care, but I just can't recommend something this difficult and also this broken.
great game, well crafted. exceptional animation work. I've loved the mashup of sim and action gameplay ever since the first Actraiser, and while the sim portions were different, the combo reminds me of that in a very good way. only thing really missing is character customization. there was nothing in the game design or writing that required having a fixed character design, and the protagonist is very generic and boring. hopefully their next game will correct this.
ok so I know there's a tendency to make fun of Homestuck and anything related to it. but this game is lovingly crafted, a delight to play, and requires no previous Homestuck knowledge to enjoy. it's a quirky, fun, and gorgeous adventure game. can't wait for new episodes!
