I found this game somewhat funny and difficult together. Even if you die many times is fast paced, hard to master but easy to replay (almost endlessly ;) ). The graphics are beautifully rendered in pixel art and the animations and blood physics are state of the art. Also the environment effects are very immersive. You may personalise the look of your fighter. My only complaint (that's why the 4 stars out of 5, but it's my absolutely personal opinion!) is the music, not fitting perfectly the setting and the period. Maybe it is the authors omage to the 90' pc music, but personally I would have preferred some traditional music. Anyway it's possible to put your favourite music as .ogg files in the main game directory. You have only to save it as .ogg files and respect the filenames overwriting them (hope this feature will be keeped in the future). Anyway I encourage you to play it, it's absolutely worth the price!
This game is simply amazing, despite its years it brings me memories when I player it on Commodore 64. Sadly the pc speaker does not give the same impact as the c64 sid, but the overall atmosphere and playability is still there. It would deserve a well made remake. If you played on any retro platform buy it, if you don't know it, buy it, you will see how a strategic/adventure/action/cinematic game should be done when you have low resources.
As the title of my review says, at least for me, It would be difficult to find another game so well developed these days. It is full of love for the genre, various, deep and let me say that if you want to jump into the world of editing and developing levels and assets, this is the best chance to start. The editor is amazing and lets you do practically everithing (once you dig in it enough time and study a little of Lua). Anyway, if you want only play, just take it, because it is a masterpiece. Still hoping for Grimrock 3 devs...
