Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

Almost Good

Visuals are very nice. I was quite suprised with the graphics. The camera is fixed and at a very annoying angle. You can't quite see far a head (obviously on purpose as each zone is quite small). It gives this weird not quite top down and not over the shoulder view that I hated. Difficulty level is super bunk. Easy/Normal is almost too simple and then the Hard difficulty is just stupid. There is little opportunity to heal as med kits are scarce so the higher diffuclty is tedious. Combat balance is totally off. You'll face upto 8 enemies at once early on. Taking into account the lack of medkits/ways to heal, if you don't get the luck of the draw on your side at the start of combat (enemy movement, accuracy/hits) it becomes pointless and necessary to reload a saved game. There is no incentive to battle through an encounter if in the end you come out worse (using said limited medkits). This game had a lot of promise but they simply made a lot of poor design decisions IMO. A tactical turnbased combat system should react and feel like there are options for the player. This game simply does not have that.

Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition

Cool Concept

I have played most of the Black Isle / Infinity engine games back in the late 90s early 2000s. I never did play PT. I don't think this game has aged poorly, if you are into this style of CRPG it slots right in with the others. Overall it is a very cool concept. Aside from that though... there isn't a lot. Very little combat and what is there is just brutal at the beginning. I had to lower the difficulty it is so ridiculous. The story is purposely vague but to it's detriment. A very simple initial concept is dragged out. Sigil, where you start the game has a lot of side quests and areas to explore. I was levelling up and at 12 hours nothing was happening (story wise). I then focused on the story and it became super linear. You start with options then the game funnels you into the latter half and seems very disjointed. I really liked the idea/overall story premise. But the game itself is super weak. Small bugs exist in the enhanced edition but nothing too terrible. I honestly have to agree this is way overhyped. I enjoyed it but putting this on the top shelf of CRPGS? Not a chance. FYI for new players it took me 49 hrs and it was suddenly over. I know I missed a few areas but I won't likely replay this.

Gamedec - Definitive Edition

Matrix and Tad Williams Otherland vibes

First off, I wouldgive this game a 3.5/5 if I could. Second, if you are not able/willing to read A LOT of text, avoid the game. You will essentially be reading the entire time. Which brings me to a negative. There is some rough translataion and the odd spelling mistake which is annoying. The biggest issue I had though (similar to the game Observer) is everything in the game is based off branching choices. At times, your choice is vague, or it will appear to mean one thing. Then, after choosing it, it was actually a totally different decision. It is so extremely annoying to not know exactly what is meant or what your choice would entail until after the decision. I am not sure if this is poor game design or because both Gamedec and the comparable Observer are both from Polish developers. Overall I enjoyed the game. It was around 18 hours for me with a quite a few reloads due to the annoying branching decision/dialogue trees. The game raises some intersting (although not exactly very original) ideas. I don't want to spoil anything for potential players. If you are into sci fi, reading thousands of lines of text, can deal with a lot of "how can I be of help" fetch type quests I would check it out. But be aware the game has some very big shortcomings.

Cyberpunk 2077

Ultimate RPG

Still playing since release. Love it.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

Pretty Good but Rough Around the Edges

This is a pretty good CRPG. If you are a 40K fan I think it is worth a look. There isn't a lot of new ideas here but it does a good job overall. I don't think I would recommend this to someone looking for an RPG that isn''t specifically 40K. There simply isn't enough polish. The combat is quite good. It moves along quickly and for the most part is consistent. I did find the line of sight mechanic fairly janky. I was beside an open railing with a clear height advantage but there was no LoS. The things I found that detract from the overall enjoyability: A lack of information. Lots of systems within the game are not properly explained, or explained at all. There is wording that is very vague. When I can't understand exactly what a skill does and need to google for help it can be annoying. The devs seemed to go for quantity over quality with the character skills etc. There is also a ton of overlap. To the point where my character did not seem unique at all. I was focused on intelligence and by the time I started the 1st chapter my character was relegated to being a sniper. I haven't completed the game yet, so I can't say for sure what I think about the story. In addition to the lacklustre character development I would give this a 3.5 overall.

Solid RPG

I am digging this game. A huge factor being the 40K setting. If you are into 40k, old school style CRPGs, story driven and turnbased combat I would recommend this. It isn't super AAA by any means but it is very well done. The only thing I would have preferred is a narrator. So far all interactive conversations have been voiced. It is rather goofy when you read along the convo box and the NPC speaking has various actions, expressions, etc described. There can be lines and lines of description and 2 spoken words. Otherwise I am finding the game very enjoyable.

Observation

Wanted to like it, couldn't like it

The concept of this game is very cool. I love a good sci fi setting as well. However, there are way too many negatives. First,, as mentioned below, the resolution. I have an ultrawide monitor and getting to use barely 50% of my screen because of the limited video options? No thanks. I am way past modding a game to make it playable. Second, the movement speed of the camera (which is basically the entire game aside from the drone) is painfully slow. Panning around at a slow speed is not fun. Lastly, the strobing effects are done to the max here. I have never had an issue with visuals in the past but this game gave me a headache with it's insane overuse of the effect.

IXION

To me... Amazing

I love this game. Normally I play FPS, squad type strategy, some RPGs. Ixion looked really interesting (mainly the setting for me) and I am so glad I tried it. Like other reviewers. I lose track of time in this. Super chill gameplay. I am not a city builder type gamer at all. At first boot I was a tad overwhelmed but just went forward with the intro. I found it really intuitive. I made a couple of newb mistakes but I haven't reloaded to an earleir save yet. Although I am only 8 hours in. Some valuable info is needlessly difficult to locate but it is all there if you explore the vaious menus. I encountered a few bugs, mainly my science ship at times won't collect science. I just give it a different destination and as soon as it moves I change the movement back to the original location. Amazing game, I highly recommend it. Such a relaxing experience for a gamer like myself who doesn't normally play these.

Midnight Fight Express

Absolute Blast

Enjoy beat em ups? Liked the Rocksteady Batman games? Then try MFE out! Easy to learn combat. Suprisngly bloody. This is a fast paced, FUN fight game. I prefer "better" graphics only in the sense I am not a huge fan of the more cartoon like visuals here. But the gameplay is so good, it doesn't affect my enjoyment at all. Oh, and the music is friggin DOPE. Within 20 mins you'll be kicking the $hit out of bad guys, parrying, dodging, using weapons, shooting enemies only to then beat their ass with the pistol or throwing it at a distant enemy to then close the distance and beat them down more. OMG this game is fun. Bravo to the dev, this game rocks.

Mundaun

Loved It!

I really enjoyed Mundaun. It's a very well done adventure game that has more gameplay than a walking sim, so I wouldn't classify it as one. The visual style is awesome. I found the drawn, sepia look very unique and it really grabbed my attention. The characters, location, story, sound and music are all excellent. The gameplay mostly consists of exploring (which is rewarded as you can increase your health, rifle handling and courage/sanity). There are obstacles and puzzles to overcome. And lastly, some combat. Ignore the previous review by the person complaining about combat for their WHOLE review. This is not a shooter game. I used the pitchfork one time, and that resulted in a sneak attack bonus surprisingly. You'll mostly be avoiding and running from enemies. However there are ways to defend yourself and I saw no issue. My only issues with the game: Sometimes you can't select items in your inventory with the mouse. It happened quite often with items on the left side. I found cylcing through them with the direction keys worked though. Lastly, I had to use a walkthrough once because I did something that then resulted in a scripted event not occuring. It was quite annoying as I always avoid walkthroughs when I can. My non spoiler hint if this happens to you: look at your inventory and try to interact/look at all of your items. I didn't find the game scary. There is a really good jump scare though. Overall- It's a really well done and an original game. 100% worth full price and IMO a must buy on sale. I logged just over 7hrs which includes me trying to not use said walkthrough.
