Endless Sky

Over 600 hours on this game

I have over Over 600 hours on this game. It is free, fun and addictive. Nice atmosphere to this universe. Do you like games with ‘grinding’? It doesn’t feel like grinding however. Every gain feels like 'leveling up'. Each planet has a story. No guns required. But you can shoot your way through the game. You can just trade and upgrade, pay off your debt, or accumulate more. Mining is an option. It plays on linux, macos, and windows. It feels very polished. I always wondered why they never charged for it. It is obviously a labor of love as they still update it! One of my favorite games. My only gripe was the save menu. It was not intuitive to me.

Star Trek™: Bridge Commander

Nope

The GOG files work. The issue for me is that there are no save points. Also the long video sequenses you have to endure just to try again. This IS a fun game, but without mods, it is tedious. Now I tried the Remastered mod. After hours of trying to get it to work, I gave up. I have tons of games that just work. So unless you have hours and hours of free time to waste, don't bother.

X4: Community of Planets Edition (2024)

I feel like a Starship Captain

I have tried all the X series. They are known for ‘steep’ learning curves and insanely awkward controls. But the games are amazing. True living sandbox. X4, has the most ‘intuitive’ control structure of all the games in my opinion. But still expect a steep learning curve. I think it took me 10 hours to get ‘comfortable’ with how everything was expected to work. But then I am a dummy. You might pick it up earlier. This is the closest you will ever come to being a starship Captain or Admiral. And that Star Wars mod!

SpaceBourne 2

Well worth the price.

I have it on steam. It is so good I just may get it on GOG too. No DRM. Awesome!!! I gave it 4 stars as there are early access bumps. But it is still a 5 star game even with bumps. Spacebourne 1 is also very good. Maybe they will get that on GOG too? Spacebourne 1 & 2 are very fun. The space combat is as fun as Rebel Galaxy Outlaw IMO. Spacebourne 2 adds FPS to the mix! The missions seem relevant and engaging. The term janky is used by others. I disagree. They are issues/bugs but they are still very solid games. I recommend both games.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

Brilliant

Some of the best boss battles I have ever had. Climbing up and attacking an impossibly large ogre is a hoot. Dragons are dangerous. Even the small battles are fun. You will be swarmed by goblins then a dragon notices you. Pure havoc! Your ‘pawns’ are nice to have battling at your side. Graphics are beautiful. Landscapes seem natural. Is it perfect? The save system is awkward. The item management atrocious. It takes 15 minutes to unload your full pack items… So I strongly recommend the patches “dinput8.dll hooks” for a F9 save anytime and “Slight more – Double or Unlimited Carry Weight” (go for unlimited). These make a great game the greatest.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Enhanced Plus Edition

A labour of love done right.

This is the most fun I have had playing a game of this genre. And I don't normally like this genre. I loved the characters, the story and presentation. I even like being the Baron / Barroness. This is a labour of love done right in my opinion. You can almost hear the dice rolls in the back. Many seem to dislike it for various reasons. I am assuming most issues have been fixed over the years. But one constant complaint is the difficulty. While I would agree (normal is too hard for me), in my opinion there is NO shame in reducing the myriad of difficulty setting to suit your ability. My only serious complaint is that it seems to require a lot of GPU (graphic card) rersources. My GPU runs hot playing this. A minor issue is that you cannot save during battle. Some battles can run long if you are controling it and not letting the AI go at it. As many games of this type you cannot rotate the field of view. Common guys, it is past the 2020's :)

Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™

It is not all that and a bag of chips.

I bought this because of the hype and praise given here. Don't be fooled like I was. I assume this game is over hyped from people who love the tabletop RPG  . There are many good things about this game. Story, characters, factions, voice acting. In fact this part is great! I never liked vampire lore. Sucking blood. Not very creative. Bela Lugosi and Twilight say it all.  But the characters, story and lore in this game made me rethink vampire possibilities. The sad part is you will spend 5% of your game with the good stuff. The rest of the time you will be doing the fighting. 95% of the game is fighting. Fight mechanics felt like playing with oven mitts on even when you level up.It got so bad after 35 hours I just turned on god mode so I could enjoy the story. If you reached 35 hours and the game play and levels still stinks, the game stinks. The graphics and level design, meh.... Don't get me wrong. All things considered, it is an OK game, but it is not the great game it could have been.
