The concept of the game is great. The story line is rather complex and fast-paced. It is therefor difficult to get emotionally involved in what's going on. The actions levels (fighting, shooting, collecting ammo and filters) are terrific and very engaging. They're very fun. The graphics and music are also top notch! So far the good news. Now for the bad. Going from point A to point B is challenging at best. Half of the time you have no idea where you're going, or even where you're expected to go. To make matters worse, some levels are simply too dark to navigate (even with your lighter or the light on your gun). As a result, you spend a lot of time just walking around endlessly, missing passages and supplies which you need later on. For several levels, I had to rely on an online walk-through, or I never would have made it out of them... And then, there's the bugs. I can forgive the very few visual bugs, which spawn enemies out of thin air. But one in two ladders are buggy, forcing you to climb it at an impossible slow rate. Sometimes you can simply jump off the ladder and try again, but if there are ten demons waiting for you below, that's not really an option. I've suffocated more than once on one of those 'slow ladders'. Using Alt-TAB during the game results in a crash, and even closing the game the proper way, causes the game Window to stay active. The only way to really close it, is through the Task Manager. It's a shame, because this could have been a really good, engaging game. Instead - except for the action levels - it's a frustrating, difficult-to-navigate mess!
This game is a classic on Amiga. It's fun, challenging and just awesome to play. This version of the game however, despite its very low price, was a disappointment as far as graphics and sounds are concerned. Horrible quality! I expected more from GOG.
After buying and playing the first Desperados, I was really looking forward to the sequel, but boy, was I disappointed! Desperados 1 was a really good game, graphically stunning with great controls. Desperados 2 is the exact opposite. The controls and map-layout have been changed, and not for the better. The controls feel all wrong and sometimes you have to repeat the same command four or five times before the character actually does what you want it to do. The map layout is confusing and nothing like the clear tactical map in the first installment. Don't spend your money on this game, just play Desperados 1 a second time!!!
Easy to learn, hard to master. It literally takes just seconds to get the hang of the controls and after about a minute you think, 'Yeah okay, I've got this... I can score 2000 with my eyes closed', but then you realize you're a bridge/tunnel short, that one of your lines is getting overcrowded or that the last station you've connected makes one of the lines too short, causing delays... And by the time you've fixed that problem, there are two more just waiting around the corner. You can play the same city fifty times over and it will come out looking different each time. With three types of gameplay and an endless replayability, you'll never get bored. The graphics aren't stunning as perhaps in other simulators, but it works for this game! Conclusion: excellent, fun game at an unbeatable price!
