Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

Techland at it's best

i had played this on the 360, and it's not a case of nostalgia, this game is just technically brilliant, and has a very decent western story that would of been at home in Hollywood. in what is typical of Techland, they were pushing the mechanics of the FPS genre again here, and succeeding far better than what they had in Call of Juarez 1. the auto-contextual cover system in this game had finally delivered a near perfect system for FPS immersion, and as far as i'm aware hasn't been bettered since. my favourite of the Call of Juarez series, and amongst my top 5 choice of single player FPS games. i played it through thrice on the 360, and will do it again on PC. thanks GOG for finally getting this gem in the store.

Spec Ops: The Line

stays with you.

played this when it released on the 360. to me it does for war games what Apocalypse Now did for war movies. ok the story isn't that level of epic, but the mental decline of not only your character, but also your crew, is something i still remember vividly, a brutally honest wargame and still my favourite. if you try this, make sure to experience the different endings. 5 stars for being unforgettable.

Diablo + Hellfire

still enjoying it

i enjoyed this game a lot in it's day, LAN parties and all. buying it again here and i've found it still fun, although a lot simpler than a lot of the modern games of this type. it's light on reading and graphically bland nowadays (though that gives the game an oppressive feeling), but that music and sound, it's haunting beyond anything i've played still. i find Diablo far creepier than 2 and 3, and like these, your mouse is going to get a workout. i think the price point is fair for the amount of game here and recommend it to anymore looking for a lighter type of Grimm Dawn. turn the lights off and the headphones up and get your skin crawling.

Call of Juarez

Hooked me again

the reviews here pretty much say it all. played it through twice on X360 and now i'm into it again. any other FPS this clunky would have me stopping an hour in and never playing again (mind we are spoiled these days with titles like Dying Light), but third time around and i'm still enjoying it. i think there were some new ideas for FPS gaming here but it didn't quite gel, but that story...just pure classical western, and at points it flows so well. i'm glad it made it to GOG. i hope this sets a premise for at least the sequel/prequel Blood Brothers to get here, as i still rate it as one of the best storied FPS of all time, and the contextual cover system in it still hasn't been matched yet. oh, Gunslinger would be nice too.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA - Ultimate Resource Bundle

30 bucks for cheat codes and an outfit?

30 bucks for cheat codes on a 60 bucks game, utterly disgraceful. i'm not even going to buy the main game now after seeing this.

Seven: The Days Long Gone Demo

One for the sneak and steal lovers

any developer that puts out a free demo of their game gets my vote, and while there are mechanics in the game that are missing from the demo, what i played was enough to convince me to buy it. i do recommend giving it a thorough playthrough, as initially i was so-so about the game, but after spending time messing about i appreciated it more.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil

Still a solid FPS experience!

I'm a PC gamer these days but I kept my old N64 just so I could still play Goldeneye and this game once in a while. It's one of the most satisfying FPS experiences I've had to date. Solid collision detection and creature animations, along with spectacular kill shots, that are good and gratifyingly gruesome even by today's standards. The level design is still beautiful with a great ebb and flow of intensity. I still get little jumpscares from this game. On it's hardest level Turok 2 is quite tough for an average gamer like me, with gluts of ammo turning into nothing and enemies that lumber about making headshots hard, and the fallback weapons are just a bow or claw, with arrows being collectible from where they land. It all gives a more desperate but engrossing shooter experience. It's definitely best played at the hard level, and for an even harder game play with a controller instead. A headshot will still take most enemies down but bodyshots are far less effective as you ramp the difficulty up. Of course you take more damage as well. The story and collection of gems is very typical Turok, and the objectives are similar throughout the game, so this is more about enjoying the battle along the way. But it's still one of my favourite battles of all time. This game deserves the attention of any gamer, and would be a solid 5 stars if not for the jittery frame rate I get on my i5/290X. This game should be running over 60fps, so i hope there is a planned fix coming up for it.
