Ion Fury + Aftershock

Boomshoot Genre Perfection

This game reminded me of what made me start loving games in the first place: consistently perfect level design. The levels in Ion Fury not only make for great exploration and combat encounters, but they also feel like real places. The cyberpunk aesthetics in both sublime (synth) music and art design only help to cement this perfection by creating a world that the 90s envisioned as the near future. The only slightly low point in the entire game is the final boss, but it's really about the journey and not the destination. I originally bought this on the Series X, and it was so good that I needed the DLC so I bought the combo here on GOG., then I bought it for my girl on Playstation. I haven't actually played the DLC yet but considering how good the main campaign is I'm glad I bought it if for nothing more than to support Voidpoint. The GOG version is the superior version; the colors pop more and the controller is far more precise. So for anyone who prefers a controller this game will comfortably accommodate you even on higher difficulties.

Turbo Overkill

Triple A is finished

Are you looking for an S-tier, cyberpunk-themed boomer-shooter with a flawless soundtrack? Well that's down the hall at Ion Fury. This here is an S-tier, cyberpunk-themed ARENA-shooter with a flawless soundtrack. I don't understand how this is considered, "boomer," considering all of the modern conventions, abilities, upgrades, sidegrades, and "builds," that, when combined with the insane frenetic pacing, acrobatics, parkour, chainsaw-sliding, adrenaline-soak chaos, just screams modern shooter. Is it because it's not COD or Battlefield or whatever? And as for the "ARENA" thing, yes, the levels are huge and intricate and a joy to traverse and blow your way through, but every now and then you get locked in a room and put through the ringer. Well, whatever, this game is beautiful, it sounds beautiful, and the action lives up to the name. It's so beautiful, in fact, that you might just wish it would slow down so you could explore the city and have the world fleshed out a bit, but this ain't that kind of game; there's cyborgs to kill. I suppose if there are any downsides it's that towards the very end things start to drag a bit, but that's really about 5% of the total experience, maybe less. Oh, and never play this before going to bed; it's like a pot of coffee and a syringe full of dopamine. Edit to add: I played with a controller and it works brilliantly. Street Cleanter difficulty was no problem. Yes, I know, heresy, whatever.
