realMyst: Masterpiece Edition

Please, take off the Nostalgia Goggles.

Many people have been complaining that this release of yet another Myst version is not worth the money. I wanted to set the record straight that this game is NOT the abysmal pile of crap many reviewers are making it out to be. Is it perfect? Not by any means. There are occasional hiccups and glitches. You also want to make sure your PC hardware can handle it without slowdown (the minimum requirements just make the game launchable, not enjoyable). Those things can be said of pretty much every 3D rendered game ever made. However, the remastered audio quality (which is also highly important in Myst) is fantastic this time around, and the graphics (when working as the developer intended 98% of the time) are fantastic. If you've played RealMyst, you already know what to expect gameplaywise. The mouse movement is surprisingly smooth, and the level of freedom in "free-roam" mode is worth experiencing. There are obviously going to be some "invisible walls", since they aren't going to allow you to simply walk into the ocean and die. But, remember all those times in classic Myst where you thought "Man, it sure would be cool if I could walk up and look over that cliff or see what's behind that building." Well, now you can, and it adds a level of freedom to Myst that simply didn't exist before. Whenever you have truly legendary games like Myst, it's hard to give remakes a fair shot, since you want it to feel just as epic as it did during your childhood. In that sense, no re-release can quite measure up. I just want people to take off their nostalgia goggles for a second look at this for what it is. A truly fantastic product in gorgeous HD graphics and remastered sound. I'd recommend it to ANYONE, Myst fan or not.
