Paradise Lost

I liked it (a lot) but...

I just reviewed another game that I had a technical issue with and wanted to share the solution that worked for me. During that review I mentioned this game and found I never did a review for it! So, here it is... I agree with the majority of reviews I have seen, this game is super slow. So much so I almost quit early. But...I’m glad I didn’t. I really liked the story and art. It’s actually sad to me that due to the game play issues (so slow!) this game gets so many negative reviews. I’m a FPS player and so I understand the frustration, if this story was in a Stalker, System/BioShock or similar game play element I would consider this a 5 star for sure and this review would sound like I was paid :-) But it’s a walking sim. and I think my first of this type. As much as I like the game I hope they consider making a larger game with more interaction (FPS please!!) because I want more of this back story and events. The game mechanics here ‘work’ they just do not match the level the story and environment are at. On the technical side I encountered no issues so I cant speak for what others had happen, perhaps I was lucky. So in the end I can’t judge this game against others that it is not trying to compete with. Since walking sim and speed are a factor, I took away a star. I liked the game a lot but can absolutely understand the feedback from the other reviewers. For me, I am considering this game a first of hopefully many more games from PolyAmorous, I really look forward to your next one!

Ug....why did I think I would like this

Read & watched many reviews which made it sound like something interesting. The mysterious island, cool radio feature (that does not get in the way but I felt added to the overall environment), wondering how the story and event in the past would be told and somehow fit into my exploration, and adventure. What did I get? Way too much teen drama combined with two features I could not look past. The first is how you respond or interact in conversation. The game gives almost no time for you to think about which choice you would want to pick and similar to Mass Effect (2-3) I found choices I picked did not come close to what I wanted to say. If you are trying to 'explore' or actually do anything other then focus on the seemingly pointless banter that goes on endlessly you will miss your chance to respond. Second issue I have with the game is a feeling of having no control or freedom. If you decide you do not want to take part in the shallow 'discussions' taking place and want to explore forget it. The game controls your options and limits the adventure which may work if that is your style of play but I wanted to wander off and discover on my own. A 'press' review stated this was -a mix of Freaks and Geeks and the best teen films of the 80s. This was something that got me interested in the game (I really like F&G and 80s movies) . I have no idea what part of the game fits that description. Maybe the end (which I didn't make it to)? Just my opinion of course. Someone looking for this type of game will probably find it's good. But for me it represents my first real mistake-buy on GOG. Still love GOG and this was completely my fault, I should have watched a play through. 2 stars for it working with multiple monitors, the radio feature, and Alex being a cool character. Minus remaining stars for excessive 'teen drama' and allowing that to interfere so badly with what sounds like a good story . Sorry GOG for the negative review. :-(
