I enjoyed playing it, and far more than most of AAA titles that I have tried out lately. This is why I give this game five stars. It is not the best game I have ever played, but what is there is quite well done and certainly kept me playing until I finally finished it just now.
The developers tried to make this an immersive and realistic experience, and while they certainly didn't succeed in every detail, the overall feeling when playing this game is just fantastic. I honestly haven't felt this excited about playing a game in over ten years, it's that good. (Or rather, it's a shame that modern games have become so stale and bland). Combat is fun for me, NPCs are great and voice acting is really excellent so far, and the quests have been good so far. There are glitches, and several annoyances, but all of that pales in comparison with the sheer joy it is to play the game.
I was very skeptical at first - the concept of a roguelike in space and then with arcade-like handling instead of being a sim seemed so wrong to me. But after trying it out I just can't get enough of it. Everything is just so well implemented: - looting is great fun and does not feel grindy at all - there are quite a few learning opportunities (little handholding) - the first time these can be a bit frustrating, but after overcoming them there is a true sense of achievement. - fights are fair - if you die it's usually because you did something wrong, or there was something new you needed to learn - even if you die, the perk system ensures you enjoy going right back into the game - there are so many different weapons and other equipment that make for really great gameplay - your ship AI is bound to keep you entertained and delighted with his commentary as well. I would happily pay for the game even if the current version was the final release, but the developers will add even more stuff. Do not miss out on this!
This game is short, yes, but ultimately it offers unique gameplay that is done so well that I keep coming back for more. Fortunately there are both endless/challenge modes that should keep you satisfied for quite some time. Yes, you will be doing the same thing over and over, but personally I feel like I still have plenty of ways to improve with the few mechanics there are. My favorite is the timed 20 kills challenge. Enemies are all around you and you have to keep your wits together and use every advantage you have to survive, and you have to be quick doing so too. All that being said, I wouldn't pay the full asking price, that price is too high. I got it for 15 dollars and that seems a fair price.
