Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition

Great game hidden behind terrible ideas

There is a lot of great stuff in this game and it's pretty fun once you get what's going on. The visuals have a distinct, stylized look that really adds to the atmosphere. The upgrade mechanics are interesting and the choice to escape with your loot, or press on but risk losing it, is impactful, as is the decision to keep your upgrades or burn them for health. But I don't think most people will get that far before throwing their hands up in the air and quitting. There's no text anywhere, even on the menus, so that you might literally need a tutorial on how to exit. You CAN remap the controls, but good luck figuring out how. You're going to have no clue what any of the powerups to, partly because it takes finding quite a number before they have any noticeable effect. The game uses a clicker mechanic, whereby you get currency for shooting, or waiting, This is terrible and makes no sense in a challenging shooter game. The clicker mechanic ALSO means that your default gun fires very slowly if you hold down fire, but you can fire quite fast if you mash it. Enjoy your carpal tunnel. Or get some kind of auto-fire program and just accept that you're "cheating." But here's the worst part: this is "Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition." It's a *revised* version of the original Nongunz, which was a Steam-only game. ALL of these things were complained about endlessly by players of the original game, and could be fixed with like two days' work. But they kept them all. What a waste.

System Shock: Enhanced Edition

Great game, now more accessible

Despite what the requirements say, it seems to run fine on my ancient 2 GHz single-core machine with WinXP. Try it at your own risk though. I've always liked the 3D LGS games (System Shock and Ultima Underworld 1&2) but felt the controls didn't age well, making them hard to revisit. This release of SS seems much more playable.
