    Description
Downwell is a curious game about a young person venturing down a well in search of untold treasures with only his Gunboots for protection. Make your way further and further down into the darkness filled with nasty creatures and mysterious secrets to collect the spectacular red gems scattered about the rocks. Step into precariously placed shops and buy some helpful items or level up between levels to battle well-dwelling monsters and uncover hidden caves filled with riches and relics. No two trips down the well are ever the same!

The Amazing Gunboots - The fashionable and lethal Gunboots allow players to unleash a torrent of firepower on the nasty creatures dwelling in the well and slow your decent with each shot.

Unique Weapons & Items - Get different weapons, shop for peculiar items and obtain powerful upgrades that all stack and affect the way you play!

A New Adventure Every Time - Each level in Downwell is procedurally generated, so no two trips down the well are ever the same providing a fresh new adventure each time!

    it just...works!

Are you seaching for a cheap, minimalistic and yet somewhat stylishly monochromatic FUN gaming experience? search no more, this is just it. I saw this little Devolver Digital gem in homepage. Actually, the cover artwork wasn't even great, but i read on. The description and a couple of screens - didn't even watch the trailer - intrigued me enough since, well, I had a 300+ GOG library and countless GREAT GAMES old and new still to play but had neither ENOUGH TIME on my hands to choose one, or the state of mind to embark on an epic quest, emotionally or mentally. I was tired from work and had half a hour before dinner. So, out of an impulse, bought this game for 1.50 euros. What could go wrong, right? Worst case scenario, I'd have lost the money for a coffee at the bar. Sooner than expected I was late for dinner because this little platform has an undeniable force which hooks you in, from the very start. The more you play, the more YOU WANT to continue playing, it's simple, direct, challanging and rewarding. 4 lives, 1 button to jump and shoot and that's all you need to face the great leap of faith into nothingness. The simple graphics manage to be neat and somewhat funny even being REALLY minimalistic, the game has a style and it gets to you from the get-go. There's not much more to say: I could describe it further, but why should I? It's so cheap you could see for yourself if it's the kind of fast-to-love gaming mechanic that you need in your day to bring back arcade into your life. With a salvo of loud and pointless gunshots from your heels.

    Procedural Platforming Fun

I picked this up today and put in a couple hours in small bites. It's a simple to pick up game: right, left, jump&shoot. Then there are powerups & upgrades to find and buy. Each level is a race to the bottom, but you need to smash enemies to collect gems to buy healing and powerups. This creates a nice tension of goals, so every level is not a race to the bottom, but rather a choice between collecting and fleeing. Also, gameplay is not about memorization, but learning enemy types and strategies as you react to the game. I switched to my gamepad, but it is easy to play with the keyboard layout. Interface is simple, controls took seconds to pick up, and so far my games have taken only a few minutes each time. Downwell is not a game I see myself dedicating hours at a time to, but rather 1-2 plays every day for a while. Fills a niche in my game diet, and I find it fun. One of my better impulse purchases on GOG.

    Jump down the well!

Jump down a well and hope you don't die. Try to jump on enemies in succession without touching the ground to string together combos. Very fast-paced and very enjoyable if you like games with permadeath and procedurally generated content, such as Spelunky.

    Simple, easy and fun

What more do you want from a game that cost 3 euros or even less? Downwell is a masterpiece. It hasn't got too much content, but will have you entertained for a long time. It just takes a simple idea: you have to go down a well collecting gems and avoiding being killed by the enemies. The result? An adictive game which is really fun to play specially in those moments of spare time you may have everyday. So just take a break and try Downwell!!

Great for short and long sessions

If you like games such as Super Hexagon or Spelunky for example, games that require a lot of skill, you will enjoy this. You could play it for five minutes or you could pour hours into the game because there is always room for improvement. I think there is a lot of value in this game for the price, especially because of the procedurally generated leves and the various "styles" (perks). The game provides a lot of fun; it borrows elements from older roguelike and platforming games but it has it's own artstyle and gameplay so it stands on it's own two feet very well. Recommended.
