The one hero+henchman mechanic in Neverwinter Nights is what I find frustrating because I came to this game straight after Icewind Dale. In IWD you can have a party of upto 6 characters which I found allows for more variety and more tactical gameplay. NWN's mechanic, on the other hand, means you either bring along the rogue so that you can have access to all the chests and disarm traps or the big fighter so that you can clear the dungeon faster, which really frustrated me. Why can't I have both? This also meant that most of the time you are just hacking and slashing instead of pausing the game and issuing orders to the characters in your party as you'd do in IWD. It just makes the gameplay more involving compared to clicking on to one enemy after the other. Despite all this NWN is a great RPG and deserves to be played by all RPG fans.
My review title says it all really. This is an amazing game - it's highly original, got amazing visuals for its time, the characters are memorable but eventually the high difficulty will get to you and you'll drop it. It was so frustrating when I played this game. I really wanted to progress but it just was not fun after my 15th death. You can't save, you need to get to the checkpoints which was my major gripe. So only get this if you are a patient individual.
I'm in two minds about this game. On the one hand it does a lof of things right - it's fun to play (upto a certain point), the spell system and the character classes are interesting but at some point the game gets boring and repetitive and you just lose interest in the plot (at least I did). Compared to a RPG game like, for example, Neverwinter Nights it's shallow and uninteresting. However, the pace is quicker. Compared to Diablo, though, it's very bland. I have to recommend only to get this if it's on sale.
Oh wow .. Septerra Core. Played this game so many years ago. It was a chance find. I didn't know anything about the game and bought it on a whim but it turned out to be one of the most memorable games I have ever played. The reason for this is simply the wonderful characters the game packs. They are memorable, their stories somehwat poignant and you grow fond of them. On the other hand, the game itself can get very annoying at times due to the respawning of enemies in a room you had just cleared to get to another room to get a keycard etc. It wouldn't be too bad if the fighting was real time but due to the unique fighting mechanics it starts to feel like unnecessary waste of time. Don't get me wrong the figthing mechanics is fun to play with. It's highly original and makes you use tactics but after fighting the same group of enemies three times the uniqueness fades out fast. All in all, though, I highly recommend this game siply due to the wonderful story and the great characters.
