Starbound

fantastic explorer builder game

I have spent hours and hours playing this game and have yet to even begin the main quest line. Thats how enjoyable it is just to explore, farm, build forts. Pros: The sound track is so pleasant my family always remarks how much they enjoy listening to it while I play. There is an immersion factor that I didnt expect with such simple graphics but many a time I have stopped farming or exploring to just watch the sun rise. lovely Many types of outfits to find and wear, you can equip them as cosmetics while using stat pcs. Many recipes to cook and farm for, you can have a ranch full of beasts and pets as well. There are quest centers and just so much to do that time flies. Graphics are well done, lots of in game easter eggs and humor. Fast travel, lots of cosmetic items to build with etc. Cons: Opening inventories or objects overlay a screen right in the middle of your monitor obstructing view, there is no way to sticky your placement permanently. Inventory management can be hard when items dont stack, containers have no sort function, no way to adapt inventory in ways that make sense for the user. Changing modes from builder to battle to farmer can be tricky and easy to make an error. I love this game, its so much more intuitive than Terrarria, easier to pick up and play.

Warning can elicit extreme nausea

I was excited to get this game but within 10 minutes of loading it experienced extreme nausea. Going into options I was dismayed to not see any option for FOV slider or to toggle off the head bob movement of the avatar. There was an option to hide the avatar and make it first person which helped but the head bob persisted. Resorting to steam there were threads regarding this issue where the dev responded that he was working on the solution, however that was in 2015 and the game more or less seems abandoned. A Steam user offered a workaround by modifying ini console line but when I tried that option it crashed the game. Gog as always was prompt in responding to my issue and when no workaround was available offered a refund. What I saw of the game was very basic graphic and art, the voice over was good and intriguing but the rooms were pretty empty of actions, you could pick up a picture or two, turn on lights, open a door. Thats it. Was not too impressed with what I saw but was hopeful the atmosphere, story and puzzles would boost its rating.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

obnoxious controls, non english play

Ok, this makes yet another gog game bought under false pretenses, store page said controller supported which I took for meaning keyboard was the main mechanics for the game. Started up the game and got an immediate warning that the game was made for controllers. Pressed on regardless and found myself awkwardly having to control two players using both hands on the keyboard in very awkward positions. to be fair you could map some of the keys but it still makes for unfun game play. Add in a camera that you have to position yourself with yet another two separate keys and get ready for really fun micromanaging every darn move, including camera. to put this really in the crapper was check point saves.. yes.. check points. so you cant leave the game when needed without having to redo obnoxious slow micromanaging gameplay all over again. On top of all this it was in Spanish. No subtitles I could see, I could understand most of what was said regardless but found it very off putting. I chose english install for a reason. Pros: gorgeous scenery, too bad you cant enjoy it as you have to continuously micromanage the camera and the two kids. Cons: see above, add in obvious tear jerker story pffft. Now all you kids get off my lawn!mn

Lilly Looking Through

laggy, annoying at times, pretty art

This game does not support AMD Radeon 7700 graphics card, which was not stated in the storefront page. As this is a rather common card I cant believe they released this without support. At start of game there was a notice that the card was not recommended and to choose between software or hardware mode. I chose hardware mode and the game seemed to run ok and I continued. However at the underwater levels it became increasingly unstable, laggy until it crashed. If the card had been supported my star rating would have been 3.5 Pros: Nice artwork, cute animation and sounds from the girl character. Puzzles were pleasant, most easy but all requiring lots of press this and see what that does kind of stuff. Music was a repetitive loop, but so mild that it was not too annoying and the loop was atmospheric. The underwater level is very pretty. Nice game mechanic to switch different views to enable new actions on the same spot. Cons: Annoyances ruined immersion, mainly there is no way to escape animations, which due to most of the puzzles being of a physical nature such as pull or push items it became repetitious and annoying having to wait till the animations were done between each action. Basically you often had to wait between each action while the character bounced and waddled here and there. Unclear menu options, for ex the load icon looked like a save icon and led to losing progress in early stage. The intro is unskippable and rather long, not a problem for most but as I was trying out the diff graphic card modes it became irritating. Overall, if you exclude the graphic card nonsupport the game was pleasant enough to buy on deep discount. Expect lots of waiting for the action icon as animations run their course, dont expect deep puzzles or story. It just a nice game to while away a few hours with no stress.

Broken Age: The Complete Adventure

Nice enough point and click adventure

I read the negative reviews and was hesitant to buy this game, but on a deep sale I bought it and dont regret the purchase. Its a pleasant game, the graphics are cartoony but are nice, especially the female characters land. The music is ok, nondescript mainly, the voice acting is pretty darn good and some of the characters are pretty funny. I was worried about the reviewers who said there were hardly any hotspots or actions to do but found plenty to do. The puzzles ranged from easy to scratch my head obscure. The story was interesting and engaging. I preferred playing the girls adventure over the boys. The artwork was very pretty. Pros: pleasant graphics, music, story, puzzles and interface. The art is very good. Not as simplistic as the negative reviewers said, enjoyable. Cons: the game still comes off geared for preteens, rather simplistic tale and actions, even tho there are some subtle adult quips buried in there. Seems a bit short Get it on deep sale, ignore the negative reviews. Its a nice game

Startopia

fun building game, sandbox mode rules

Bought this on deep sale and have been enjoying it immensely. Skip the annoying timed missions and delve into sand box mode which allows you to just enjoy building to your hearts content. Pros: Great graphics, fun animations, great voiceovers, clever and indept interactions between species and how they react to environment, each other, zealots and stress, love, disease etc. Lots to do such as designing for esthetics, best energy build, keeping your space station visitors happy, healthyb and content, planning for invasions of monsters and spies, plague, hiring and firing of workers, gardening, making your own consumables, researching and the list goes on. Cons: fiddly camera often bogs down or your view gets stuck, the only way to clear it is to log off or bounce around levels and/or try to build something. This gets annoying in short time, the worst bit is the camera pacing falling off to a slow slog. When hiring your view immediately transfers to a close up of the applicant, which often is off or seen from an interior which is unintentional. This makes it difficult to stay where you are building and keeping track of the necessary number to hire to fill out a build. Wish you could toggle it off. Its too easy to misclick and lose what you were building, or pick up the wrong item etc. It also would be nice to toggle off incoming trade vessel notifications when you are trying to just build, the constant interruptions are annoying. Even the cons did not fully impact my enjoyment of the game, its very pleasurable to just zoom around, watching your peeps, taking care of your station even after you have 'mastered' the game. You can even zoom all the way in for 1st person perspective. I would recommend playing the first couple of missions to get a feel then switch to the sand box mode which doesnt have a timer to ruin your fun. I am still learning the depths of this game, cleverly coded and animated. Lots of easter egg humor.

Torchlight

Addictive, and fun time waster

I got this game on sale and didn't think much of it at first, then I lost weeks playing it. It's a great game, so easy to pop in and out of. I often load it to burn some time in between chores or playing other more 'serious' games. Choose between 3 unchangeable avatars already loaded with their base class :mage, warrior, ranger. Each class has 3 combat trees, customize each character the way you want. Want a mage/warrior? go for it. Want a ranger/rogue? just do eet. Want to specialize and go pure mage? fine and dandy. And that in a nutshell is the game's draw. Trying out different classes and builds, seeing the different effects of spells and upgrades, hoping for high value loot drops that can give you the best gear or trash. You have 1 chest you can share among your char's. Its just so pleasant to load a game, buff your gear up, try out spells etc. There is limited crafting via deconstruction of items/gems to gain gems/items. You can gamble and buff gear with chances for devastating failures going up each attempt as well as cost. The first time I had a leet weapon completely stripped of its buffs I died. good times The cons of the game are based in its pros, the ease of playing. Its a pretty stripped down combat rpg game so the shallowness becomes apparent pretty early on. Even if randomly generated the dungeons repeat pretty frequently. The crafting is pretty limited, the vendor gear is also randomly generated each time you port so there is no way to save up for that awesome gear, its gone the next time you enter a dungeon. There are gear sets that combine to give effects, but I have only been able to equip 2 pcs of one set in all my playing, despite grinding ports to reset the vendor. You cant change key bindings which can be awkward, namely having to use shift to hold your char still while range shooting. Thats a long reach to hit #6-0 spells. Fun to play, dont expect indepth story, crafting or dungeons.

A Golden Wake

A nice looking boring game

Sorry to say but this game is boring me to tears. I love the historical setting, the nicely done pixel art, the voice acting, the environments, but so far the story itself is so bland, so dull that I can not be motivated to continue to play this. It feels almost like homework talking to characters, going thru all the options, having your exploration mapped out in such a linear fashion. There is no stumbling around, no mind boggling puzzles to make you seek out a walk thru... its just conversations, simple fetch quests and a dull persuade feature. However, I am glad to have this in my library just for its art and premise. Perhaps one day I will finish it, but frankly there are many more captivating and just as pretty point and click adventures out there.

Waking Mars

addictively fascinating

I waited to play this little gem for months, gotten in a bundle sale and quickly forgotten. What a surprise it was to play this, from the start the gameplay was fun, simple to understand and use and the story hooked me in. I was worried at first, thinking it was a platformer which I detest, but its more like a flying sim then a platformer and very forgiving. Your character can heal almost everywhere or if in dire straits you can port immediately to a life saving zone. If you die you have to start the immediate level over but death is rare. All very nice. Game autosaves frequently as well, though I was a bit worried there was no option to have a backup save if the auto one got corrupted. The atmosphere drives this game, the voice overs are very good with varied painted face images to give life to them, also well done with enough facial changes to match the text. The robot annoying at first but honestly I laughed out loud at some of its mannerisms, cheerful idiocy combined with robotic intellect. But the most perfect part of the game is the exploration. Never had I played a game that was so relaxing, mesmerizing and satisfying. You get a feel for the vastness of each underground cavern and the constriction of crawling thru tiny gaps to get to the next. Flying is done via jetpack and if I was to say in one word what that is like it would be Hummingbird. So often this game is about hovering till a seed is jettisoned from an organism, and like a hummgbird you hover, dart, swoop, dive, and speed hither and thither, pollinating the world to awake it. Very satisfying. Throughout is a excellent soundtrack, which my partner loved to listen to while he read while I played. Superb game, wish I had played it sooner

Technobabylon

pleasant adventure game

This game is pleasant, from the ease of the point and click interface, simple inventory management, music and puzzles its all good fun. The pixel art is okay, ranging from lush to barely able to tell what the object is. Some weird pathfinding when attempting some actions but never any hang ups. The atmosphere is its biggest draw, reminiscent of Blade Runner at times. The pop culture fun to explore, the technology and all that jazz. It makes a refreshing change for an adventure game. The characters are fully fleshed out and interesting, the voice acting pretty good although the male leads voice was irritating thru no fault of his own. The music was appropriate, not spectacular or anything, you are able to adjust it to your liking. There is gore, which I adored. There is humor and hip ideas aplenty. The puzzles were generally easy though with some stumpers thrown in, usually it was just click on your inventory and apply to all the hotspots on the page like every other point and click adventure game out there. There were some nice surprises tho and none felt tacked on to extend game time, they all made sense for the action of the game. All in all I enjoyed it, there are no irritations of game play such as inventory clogging useless items, wonky UI, not much back tracking, plenty of autosaves or manual saves. It even plops you immediately right back into action after death to attempt again. It gives you what you want, entertainment with no irritations.
