TL;DR: it's just an exceptionally very well game. BG3 feels as if it was made with lots of care and love. Thoroughly designed and tested. Playing on Tactician I'm shocked to see how well the difficult is balanced: forcing me to consider all the help I can get in battles, constantly inspecting enemy strengths and weaknesses, adjusting equipment, etc. One of the few things that could be improved is music. There are scenes where it's perfect, but generally it's not anything exceptional. It's a game that can swallow you for weeks, game that has it's own style. Strongly recommend!
Game is not perfect. Some parts are weird/annoying, like having high initiative can be worse than better. But overall, this game gets it. It reconstructs HoMM3 feel very well, and does better in multiple areas. It has neat graphics, good design of characters. I'd argue that it's already more balanced than HoMM. For example, Rana's early game feels extremely weak, but their end game dragons are the best. And all of this is early access - the game already feels complete minus few non-critical bugs. Just one more turn...
Just turn the head off and dive into the monster school. Despite the simplicity of the game, it has unique anime-inspired style of both visuals and (more importantly!) stories/jokes. The characters and their interactions are well written, and the stories about them incredibly fun to discover and live through.
This is a blast for anyone familiar with old-school RPGs of two decades ago. It's a modern take that carefully transferred most of the best pieces of old games, yet brings something new on the table (castle management and associated storyline). The only downside I could see is it being a bit less hardcore (and more forgiving) than the last games: for example, it's really hard to miss a companion or fail to hire one (hidden robot companion like in F2? skill-based acquiring? nah), even though I have managed to skip one. But really, just go get this game already!
I'm a kickstarter backer and I'm satisfied with the game: it performs very well at what it tries to achieve. There is quite a bit of tactics and strategy/management for a title that may run on mobile devices and has simple controls. The visual style is also pretty fun, characters are charismatic, and all the text (which is not so much) is always fun to read. It was released on all 3 platforms with very few non-breaking bugs, which deserves a lot of credit for this small indie company. Thanks for Linux DRM-free version!
Simply the best game ever made... For those who like freedom, post-apocalypsis, unique experiences, crazy music, and feel non-standard overall. You may be able to find nuances and shortcomings in the game, but where it hits - it hits as hard no other game out there. This is the game where AI can get ahead of you in the quest line, where future went so crazy you can't tell the difference with fantasy, where there are secrets yielding arcane power and endless possibilities. This is the ultimate RPG experience - the world of Vangers. Read more at http://kvgate.blogspot.ca/2012/03/perfect-game.html
