Tyranny - Gold Edition

Flawed beauty

The worldbuilding for this game is gorgeous, with wonderfully justified lore and lovely backgrounds for everything. The storyline is tempting and generally builds well, though it falls very flat in the third act. Where it all falls apart is in the overly prescriptive narrative flow, where I have broken a quest on so many occasions simply through completing a different one, or not being able to interact with some character because I inavdertently did something that I wasn't supposed to do until later. Early on in the game you make a couple of choices, and from there you are stuck in a channel, doing a particular set of things. If you play the Disfavoured faction, for example, you can rescind the Edict of Storms, but play any other faction and you cannot - even if you've read all the lore in-game that would enable it, you don't get the dialog options to do so. At the end I felt that I hadn't really got to choose who my character was: I'd just got to choose *which* character from the five game-supplied variants, and none of them felt like "me" at all.
