Might and Magic® 7: For Blood and Honor®

Excellent game

MM7 is an excellent game, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons: - I liked MM6 more - There are some bugs (or features?) that make this game a little annoying. Some of these: My party setup was Knight/Monk/Paladin/Sorcerer. At my first run I did not learn the bow skill in the first map, Emerald Isle and I could not pick it up later in the game, none of the weapon shops offered the skill. I had to restart the game, learn the skill for each of my characters except for one, (because I did not have the money) and to my greatest surprise at my second run I was able to pick up the skill at the weapon shops outside of Emerald Island. I had a similar problem with the spells. No matter how many times I've visited the master or the paramount guild of water I could not by the Loyd's Beacon spell - which made travelling a bit annoying. (Especially since half of the cities cannot be visited by Town Portal. Btw. the Town Portal spell is also a bit hard to obtain since it needs a master level in water magic, which comes a bit late in the game.) MM7 is nonlinear, which is basically a good thing but on the other hand it can lead to some problems. I took the champion promotion a bit late in the game (Win 5 battles in the Arena on Knight level). Since the monsters are generated based on the actual levels of your character, I often had to fight dragons and titans which was a bit overkill, I had to try it several times. I have read it among the other reviews that you need a cleric to complete the game - as I found out a cleric is indeed useful for a particular quest since only he can learn grandmaster body magic which saves your characters for eradication. I did not have one, and I had to try the quest several times. Since I had a Paladin who had a grandmaster mace skill I was able complete the quest since he could paralyze the problematic monster - but it was still annoying. Despite the above MM7 is a good game, I can only recommend it for trying.

Blood 2: The Blood Group

Much worse than the original

This package contains Blood 2: The Chosen and its expansion pack The Nightmare Levels. I've actually played this game the time when it was released and while I did not enjoy it as much as Blood I, I thought that it was an OK game. Now I've replayed both Blood I and its extensions and Blood 2 with its extension and I was surprised that it is much worse than I remembered - the original Blood aged much better. The science fiction setting coud work well, but the combination of bad level design, confusing story kills the atmosphere almost completely. Sometimes I were hopelessly stuck and I had no idea where to proceed - in this sense this game is the spiritual successor of Redneck Rampage, not Blood. The interesting thing is that the expansion pack has two levels which is very Blood like, which shows how good this game could have been - instead of the huge disappointment as it is. TLDR: - The Lithtech Engine is buggy - Enemy AI is terrible - Level design is bad

Quake

Worth playing, worth buying

The package contains Quake and two of its expansions. First the bad: - Although the package contains the OST for the game and its expansions, you need a little tinkering in order to hear the music ingame. I have found the solution for this here, in the gog forums, so you don't have to go far for the solution. - Just like any earlier id game, the plot and story are not the strongest part of Quake. Same for the expansions. Quake: - Once you are able to start the game with music, you are rewarded with a really memorable gaming experience. - The level design, the monsters and the soundtrack creates a really unique atmosphere. - The flow of the game is also excellent, I have never got stuck looking for switches or keys. - The single player mode is a bit short. Scourge of Armagon: - More action oriented than Quake, this is also reflected by the soundtrack. - It is a bit annoying that in contrast with Quake, the tracks of the OST are noticable shorter - This destroys the ambience a little bit, and while the new monsters and weapons are OK, it is quite possible that you complete the game and after a week you won't remember much from it. Dissolution of Eternity: - Also more action oriented, has the same problem with the length of the tracks and again, the atmosphere of the game suffers. . Maybe it is just me, but I don't like when there are too many platform elements in an FPS (i.e. jump over a river of lava from one platform to the next) and some levels were close to the edge in this expansion. - The new maps are really good. The new weapons are not really new weapons rather than alternative firing modes to the existing, but still works great, just as the new enemies. - If I have to rank, this expansion is more enjoyable than the other, but the best is still the original Quake ( (mainly because I liked its ambient soundtrack - if your musical taste is different, your oppinion may also differ !).

DOOM II

Good game, disappointing sequel

The package contains DOOM2, The Master Levels, TNT Evilution and the Plutonia Experiment. DOOM2: I have played this game after Ultimate Doom which is a really good game and set the bar pretty high. As a plus, DOOM2 operates with an expanded monster gallery and also has a new weapon. The gameplay is pretty much the same as it was in its predecessor, and it is good as it is. My problem is that I have found the ambience of UD much better: there was a progression from the tech base levels to the hellish levels. In DOOM2 most of the levels are pretty general, even the hellish levels do not seem hellish enough. At this point I am not even complaining that there is virtually no story again - you play these games for the action. DOOM2 was undeniable designed for multiplayer - this is reflected by the level design with the wide open areas. In the end DOOM2 is not bad - but I have expected a revolution, not reform. (3.5/5) The Master Levels: Some of the maps are really good, but I've found most of them to be pretty meh. In case of the huge wide areas it is a little problematic that DOOM is a 2.5 game - sometimes you cannot go into a direction because something is above you and is blocking you. I've met this phenomena mainly in this expansion pack. I was often stuck with the keys too. (2/5) TNT Evilution: Nothing special, I've already forgotten it. (3.5/5) Plutonia Experiment: This is the best wad in the package, noticeably harder then the others. The level design is ok, the gameplay is excellent, but some of the traps are so cheap that after a while it becomes predictable. I still recommend it ! (4/5) All in all the package contains around 120 levels and while I was a bit disappointed with it, I still recommend it for buying.

Dragonsphere

Flawed but enjoyable

This is my second adventure game ever after Lure of the Temptress, if you are a seasoned adventurer this might be not helpful to you (and you probably played the game anyway). Based on the screenshots you can decide whether you like the graphics or not - I personally think it is good. What you can't see on the screenshots is the voice acting which is hilariously bad. The plot is average with an excellent twist. Some of the riddles were pretty hard for me, it won't hurt if you get yourself a walkthrough before you start, just in case ( and again, it is just me - if you are an experienced player you may find them easy). After I completed this game I realized that I've enjoyed it more than I enjoyed Lure of the Temptress and 4 stars for the latter was too much - but I did not know that until I've played this one. Funny, how perception changes. I've found one bug, since I did not play the original game I have no idea whether this is related to the gog release or not: on every fourth or fifth start the game my mouse clicks did not work - I could move the pointer but could not use it for aníthing. After the game is restarted the problem ceased, but it was certainly reproducable. Since it is not a long game once you figure out the puzzles, I might just replay it again sometimes.

Total Annihilation: Commander Pack

Good, but has its drawbacks

Total Annihilation is a really good RTS, especially in multiplayer. Perhaps the highlight is the resource management system: you don't have to send harvesters/peons/etc to gather spice/gold/etc in the middle of a battle - this aspect of the RTS genre always was a little bit dumb. However, that is only half of the game and in single player mode TA does not shine that much. The game has virtually no story, it is like that the campaign is a tutorial for the multiplayer mode. The two sides are basically the same, I've completed the game with ARM and I am not planning to complete it with CORE any time soon. The AI is not particularly good and it cheats, while you have to spend considerable effort to provide a good radar coverage of the map, it always seems to know where your units are. Since some weapons and units can cover more than half of the map, this can be really annoying - especially on the naval maps. The pathfinding is also terrible. If it were a standalone game, I would gave it 3.5 stars out of 5. I've enjoyed Core Contingency much more. While it still does not have a real story it gives you some really clever new units and terrain types - which sometimes confuses the pathfinding even more, but I would still gave this game 4.5 stars out of 5. Battle Tactics does not even want to be a comprehensive game. It is a set of missions focusing on the micro management which throws away the most important aspect of the original game. These "commando" missions amplify every problem with the AI to such an extent that I was often tempted to walk away from the game. Unlike Core Contingency and Total Annihilation, Battle Tactics had a number of bugs. After I've completed a map I often could not save on the new map until I did not complete again the previous one. Since I did not play the original Battle Tactics I do not know whether these bugs related to the Gog release or not - I only know that if it were a standalone game, I would gave it 2 stars out of 5.

DOOM (1993)

Surprisingly good...

...it surpasses a lot of its successors in the genre it defined. I gave it 4 stars because the singly player mode is too short and there is virtually no story (typical id game) . Besides that, it is perfect.

Caesar 3

Not the best idea for casual gamers

The game might seem to be a little too hard at first since even relatively stable cities can fall apart in minutes due to the seemingly slightest mistakes. Maybe Caesar3 punishes beginners like me too hard, but once you have figured out the game mechanics the game becomes rather easy. If you don't have the time or the patience to learn how to play this game then you should skip this. If you like challenges and city builder strategy games you should give it a try. (Note that this was my first city builder game so I cannot benchmark it with other city builders.) Also note that in the GOG version I had problems with controllong the audio in-game.

Redneck Rampage Collection

High Frustration Tolerance Needed

You know that something is seriously wrong with your FPS if it needs a walkthrough. Redneck Rampage could be a really exciting, unique, fast paced FPS with an excellent soundtrack but the flow of the game is completely destroyed by the level design since it could take hours to figure out where the next switch or key is. This is true for the expansion packs as well. I have completed the game but I don't think that I will ever play it again (or its expansions). Note that in the GOG version I could not control the volume of the CD audio ingame.

Lure of the Temptress (1992)

Not bad, but...

I usually do not play point'n'click adventure games but this was added to my account for free, so I gave it a try. I had no problems with the graphic but the sound and music were really... functional. Since I am not an adventure game expert I had to use a walkthrough and I cannot decide whether it is hard or not by adventure game standards but some of the puzzles seemed pretty illogical even for me. However, my biggest problem is that this release is full of bugs and I was "lucky" enough to reproduce several of them. I even had to restart the game once, because one of the NPCs I had to interact with was "stuck" between two screens. Despite this, the game can be completed in just one afternoon and I've really enjoyed it - but if you are an expert of adventure games, you may easily find it otherwise.
