After waiting for over a year after it's release on Steam, I'll be getting this on GOG when it's on sale. Interacted with all the parties involved (13AM, GOG, etc.) off an on throughout that time, and got nothing but finger-pointing and blame-shifting from all of them. Lesson learned. Never again.
There would be a great many things to recommend this game: art and animation, music, voice over, etc. That all comes to a screeching halt when you get to the highly unintuitive, badly explained vertical movement and the relentlessly cheap enemies that hit you for half of your party health before you even enter combat. This wouldn't be quite so bad if dashing in to attack first actually worked on a regular basis, but it won't. Glad I got this on sale, but still irritated that I spent anything on it at all. Played for about 3 hours before uninstalling. If you're looking for a great platformer, keep looking.
Initial release is quite buggy. Start-up triggers a game-ending AMD driver crash if GOG Galaxy is left running when game starts. Game gets stuck when asking if you want to post a score to GOG (controller buttons stop working on that screen, making it impossible to select yes OR no. Second tier maps are all entirely black; only wandering enemies are visible (might be an intentional "challenge" - if so, it's stupidly annoying, and needs to go away). And now, since GOG is operated by bone-heads, I'll never be able to update this review, when/if the developer actually corrects these issues. Congratulations!
Payed $1.49 for it on sale. Can't play at all. "Controller Support" is a myth (again); can't confirgure my controller to play (system doesn't even seem to "see" it), and the game doesn't bother telling you what one specific controller it will accept. In short, if you don't know if you have the right kind, don't bother getting this.
A few folks have already mentioned the issues with the way these games save data, so I won't go over that again. My biggest wish is that there had been at least some graphical overhaul done, to make them more visually compatible with later systems (Win 10+). In particular, I wish Starflight 1 had used the Sega Genesis port of the game, which was noticeably more detailed than the original.
All the silly, raunchy hijinks of 1 and 2, with a different resource mechanic, deeper (lol) story, more convoluted pathing, all the old characters, many, MANY new ones. In short, more of everything that has made the first two games such a joy to play!
Key points: Beautiful manga-inspired graphic style. Solid design (characters and upgrades, interface, missions, enemies, learning curve). Good sound design (music, effects, VO). Runs very smoothly on Win10. All in all, a fun game for fans of mecha, kaiju, anime and manga.
By and large, I enjoy platformers, no matter how hard they are. I'd enjoy this one more, if it wasn't for two key issues: 1) No controller support. Yes, you can configure your own keyboard set-up (more on this in item 2), but being able to use a usb game control would be fantastic. 2) Certain keyboard control configurations cause surprising malfunctions. For example using 'a' to move left, 'space' to jump, and 'right' to run caused the game to keep me from making running jumps to the left. Changing the configuration resolved the issue, but leaves me wondering what other configuration glitches are elsewhere to be found. Ultimately, I ended up uninstalling twice over these issues, and don't forsee installing it again.
