Hands of Necromancy

Basic Boomer Shooter (think Heretic)

This is a basic boomer shooter that could easily be the cousin to Heretic or Hexen. If you liked those games, but this. There's nothing really innovative here, but there doesn't need to be. It's solid and fun. The nice thing is also that it's straight zDoom engine stuff. Actually, I was able to use it with the -iwad parameter pointing to it's main iwad and play it just fine on the Linux version of gzDoom. I could then run other add ons with it. It's been a great time, well worth the price.

Dread Templar

Gen X Boomer Shooter Approved

I had this game for about a year before ever really getting to it. I bought it, installed it (on Ubuntu Linux via Wine which it runs buttery smooth on) and then never got to it. Then....I actually started playing it. This is what quake 2 should have been...but way more bad ass. I don't like the save system (checkpoints) but they are prevalent so it's not that big of a deal. Controls are smooth and just work. There are enough controls to do everything needed but not overwhelm all the action. If you like the shooters, this one is excellent. These devs knew what they were doing! Just buy it.

If it worked

It looks like it may be good...if it worked. I've spent awhile now trying to see what was happening and all it will do is start to load the loading bar. The log file goes nowhere. This is the Linux version so if you are using Linux...maybe see if there is a demo somewhere first.

Awesome...but needs optimization

First, this is or what should have been Doom 3. It is completely BA. The controls are sweet and it really shows the designers know what works. I was able to jump in right away. The down side....optimization sucks right now. If they get this optimized so it doesn't need a high end video card just to run things at a playable frame rate on the lowest settings they'll sell a lot more. On another note, I was only able to bang through for awhile once. For whatever reason on my computer NO exit options was in the game menu. In other words I had to CTRL+ALT-DEL and sign out to get out of the game. For now I uninstalled it because I can't be doing that every time I exit. I paid full price for this and hope some of these things are fixed in the final release. If so, I'll be rocking this game for a long time to come.

Blasphemous

Glitchy and not finished

So far I've been able to install this map the keys to my key mapped gamepad, and jump around. For whatever reason the keymapping in the game does not work correctly yet. Perhaps the normal x-box gamepad works great. After validating the keymapping in a text editor I went back in several times and still could not get it actually work correctly. The attack and jump keys would not be separated and I had to CTRL-ALT-DEL every time to exit the game. So...if you plan on an x-box controller it may be fine. If you plan on anything else, maybe wait until it's fixed.

Zombie Night Terror

I didn't want to like this game...

I got this on sale and figured it would be funny for a minute. I didn't want to like it. I'm not a fan of the new 8 bit look on modern PCs. I hated how minecraft used the old looking graphics yet it took some horsepower to run it. I thought it was just dumb to make a modern game look like an old one I played on my Pentium 75 mhz with 4 megs of ram years ago. Yet...I loved this game. I stayed up way too late playing way wasting time. It's funny, challenging, and has lots of replay since you can go back and replay any level you want. I love that they included the level editor for more fun. It's like lemmings or pingus x10. Just buy it. You'll be glad you did.

Project Warlock

Great throwback FPS ...almost

This game has great game play, controls, and action. It doesn't bog down with stupid nonsense and just let's you wipe out some bad guys. I did however delete it after playing for about an hour. I'm not a fan of the whole replaying episodes and limited lives things. One thing I loved about the old Doom games was that like many PC games you could SAVE a game and come back to it. This one you can't. I'm 46 years old and often play for a short time each time. I don't have time to burn through an episode to make it to the boss then all my lives gone. Yes, it's fun but c'mon...the SAVE is a staple of PC games, or at least was for these kinds of games. With that, I don't have the time or desire to keep at this and went back to zDoom for my brief shooter fun. So it's a good buy if you know that going into it.

Cossacks II Anthology

Only on an older system apparently

I have to add my "It doesn't work" to the rest of the reviews. The first anthology was great but I can't even get a scenario to load. I tried several different configs and it locks up every time it starts a scenario. Tried on a Windows 10 machine and my mac via Wineskin trying lots of different configs. If you're looking for something good that works, stick with the first anthology and save your money on this one.

Grim Dawn - Ashes of Malmouth

Effectivly broke my game

Grim Dawn is a GREAT game. However, this addon made me have to uninstall everything and re-install the original just to get it to run. After lots of digging and trying to figure it out, it still would not run.. It starts but when I start a game, it just locks up. It looks like there were lots of other people with similar issues since there are forums loaded with the same thing...original works great but it won't run after this addon is installed. So, getting this is a gamble. I'd wait until it's on sale in case it doesn't work for you.
