The story is nice and the NPC recitation is well done, very movie-like. The visuals are breathtaking, kind like the first games with very curated static backgrounds. Too bad the game stutters without any reason to (it's an isometric RPG with mostly static backgrounds). Combat is clunky, magic is more limited than weapons and basically useless. Weapon selection is poor, you'll get your best halfway through. Exploration is a big word for this game, rewards for it are useless and it's not an open world in any sense of the term. Wait for an hefty discount before buying it.
The UI text is exceptionally small and does not scale with resolution, so reducing it does not work. Of course it has no option for UI scaling. To be clear, I am a programmer and use a 22" monitor, so I see a lot of small text every day without problems. This game has the text very, very, very small and it requires a ton of reading. People are asking for a solution fro TWO years, and none came. The game looks like it can be good but I, and many other near sighted people, can't play it for longer than 10 minutes due to extreme headaches mounting. This is as good as having the game CTDing, since it is unplayable anyway.
The premises are good, the voice acting is great but playing the game on a PC with mouse and keyboard is masochism. Buttons sharing several functions, pointing items in menus actually working like an old DOS game - when you click it doesn't always activate what you're pointing but what's "active" in that moment. The fighting system might be good in a RTS but the pacing is way too fast to activate the modes - which are scattered all over the keyboard - and actually fire, the handling of the ship is *painful* and it has the habit of accelerating on its own volition. After 20 minutes it gave me nausea and a headache, and I'm a hardcore gamer since 1993 with tens of thousands of hours in many games, even the old Descent and Descent II. It could be great but its controls are really horrible, even remapping them doesn't help. Apropos the remapping: it can't match the correct icon to many buttons, so 0 of numpad gets depicted either as "Q" or as an arrow key, depending on what button you remapped the previous step. All lateral mouse buttons become depicted as Left Click, despite being recognized by the system. Is this a pre-release? Luckily I've waited the maximum discount to buy this game or I'd be very, very, very pissed.
