Act of War: Direct Action

Great RTS Game

This old game is up there with CNC Generals, and I think this game has an edge for single player. The FMV cutscenes are both bad and great. Highly recommended if you are into RTS games. I'm also impressed with the map designs for Washington D.C.

Act of War: High Treason

Good follow up to Act of War but flawed

This game is worth it if you didn't have enough of Direct Action. However, it has many flaws, inlcuding a large diffuclty spike, many missions where you are unfairly restricted in terms of tech or units, an audio bug with naval units, and a downgrade from the already cheezy FMVs from the first game. Whereas Direct Action is a 5 star game in my opinon, this one is more of a three. Still, there is fun to be had and the graphics can be impressive for its age.

Close Combat 5: Invasion: Normandy - Utah Beach to Cherbourg

Close Combat on Windows 10

This game runs fine on Windows 10, 64-bit. Alt-tabbing does incur the occasional crash. A relaunch will fix the issue. It is recommended to save after every battle to ensure crashes have minimal impact on your campaign. Otherwise, this is identical to the original version of CC5 released on disc, as far as I can tell. I am currently playing the grand campaign as US on the toughest difficulty, and the game is the same as I remember. About 50 hours in, with the game nearly over. If you are a fan of the CC franchise, I recommend buying this.

SimCity™ 3000 Unlimited

Best SimCity Iteration

This game is my personal favorite of the series. It had nice, crisp graphics and more in-depth simulation than SimCity 2000. It was also easier, in my opinion, to balance the budget and design a prosperous city than SimCity 2000 and SimCity 4. Highly recommended for nostalgia purposes or for someone looking for an introduction to the SimCity series.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Ah, the memories. Great game

RTCW was id's best, besides DooM. Great gunplay, cool levels. and awesome multiplayer. While some of the early levels (namely the catacombs) drag a bit, most of the single player levels are a blast. This game is a great WW2 FPS in its own right, and in my opinion had a much better campaign than the juggernaut of the era, Medal of Honor Allied Assault. Being an id game, things eventually turn more demonic/occultish as you uncover the Nazi's nefarious plans. At the time, the class-based MP was pretty groundbreaking and set the formula for Enemy Territory and Quake Wars. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys old school FPS.

VVVVVV

Great Platformer

This game is a ton of fun. Graphics are simple but colourful, the game is challenging but rarely frustrating, and the soundtrack is killer. Recommended.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Great horror game

This is definitely one of the creepiest games I have played, it excels on atmosphere. Monsters in the dark are a lot scarier when you don't have a shotgun or laser rifle. What do you do? Run like a little girl into a closet and hope the monstrosity breathing down your neck doesn't bash the door down and kill you dead. Some of the intensity wears off towards the end, but any fan or horror games should definitely try this game out.

Far Cry® 2: Fortune's Edition

An above-average, but not great open-world shooter

Ah, Farcry 2. I have mixed feelings about this game, so I'll go into the good and bad: The good: Great graphics, dynamic fire effects. No monsters this time around. Has that old-school shooter feel. Upgradable weapons. Cool animations for your character. Big, open environment. Fun to kill AI, at least for awhile. Ability to travel via bus to cut down on looonngg driving times. Cool mechanic where if you die, a buddy will come and rescue you. The bad: Repetitive missions - especially side missions. Bad voice acting. Enemies respawn every time you leave the immediate vicinity - very annoying after awhile! Virtually every single NPC in the nation wants to kill you. Malaria scripting very annoying, but can be avoided for long stretches. It can be a chore to drive from point A to point B. Vehicles aren't as fun to drive as they should have been. Also, considering the subject matter, the game isn't edgy enough. Summary: Far Cry 2 can be good if you are looking to scratch that shooter itch. It has that old school shooter feel, and doesn't feel like a COD clone. For whatever reason though, and it is hard to pin down, the game isn't nearly as fun as it should be. Graphics 8/10, gameplay 6/10, overall about 7/10 (rounded up to four stars on rating bar). This is the Fortune Edition, which I think includes some DLC that I did not have when I played it. A few new vehicles and maybe a new weapon or two. Being open world, the game does offer some good play length if you try to do everything. The average player will probably get at least 8-10 hours out of the game before it gets too boring to complete. Some tips for those who decide to buy: Do as many side missions as you can to unlock better weaponry earlier. It is a huge help. Also, for those who hate the malaria mechanic, it only occurs when you complete story missions. So if you enjoy side missions, diamond hunting, and just exploring, you actually won't be affected by malaria much.
