I stopped playing after three hours. It's just too much dialogue, too much blah blah, too much digging through dialogue trees to try and find what gives you a bonus. Not enough combat, and combat is too tedious. Yes, it's an interesting story, but I should've learned my lesson from Pillars of Eternity. The same company made this game and I stopped playing PoE, so why did I think I'd enjoy Tyranny? Oh well. I'm too old and have too many responsibilities to be able to dive into walls of text for just an hour each day. I'd rather have a more action-oriented RPG at this point, I guess.
I really wanted to like this game. Having played the older D&D games like IWD, IWD2, BG, BG@, NWN, I heard that Pillars carried on the torch. I was sorely disappointed. - The lore is a mess. Forgotten Realms is so much nicer. - There's too much to read. And it's BORING! If I want a good read, I'll read a novel. - Towns are empty. You don't feel as if you are walking in a city that's alive. - The Kickstarter backer characters are EVERYWHERE and they just break any immersion. - The combat AI is stupid. E.g. spellcasters stand in the doorway, where they block your melee chars' path. The melee chars then move like they are running, while they're staying in place. - The music is bland. - Spells are boring and seem to have very little effect. - You get no XP for killing monsters. - Itemization is boring. There is no progression in items or stats. - The stats.... get this: might is not the most important stat for fighter types. Lol. You need INT, resolve, and other stupid stats. - Items and characters look boring. Nothing stands out. Everything looks drab. - There's no "big bad guy." Sounds cliche and most games are straightforward, right? So you'd think a "great story game" like Pillars is an improvement? Think again. It's some mumbo-jumbo about hollowborn children, and you're following some vague story, with no bad guy or something to keep your interest. It just seems pointless after a few days. - You can't rest without camping supplies, of which you can only carry 2-4 depending on the difficulty level. - You don't really want to use your "use on rest" abilities in combat, because you can hardly rest. This makes combat boring and bland. I tried, I really did. I don't know why this is rated so highly. Probably because people are desperate for anything that resembles the old BG2 style games? I'd rather do another BG2 or IWD runthrough any day. Sorry Pillars, you just don't have it for me.
I wanted to like this game, I really did. I've played the Icewind Dale series, BG1, BG2, and many other RPGs, and was hoping this game picked up the torch from those games and continued that "style." Unfortunately, I'm about to give up on the game. I doubt I'll finish it. My main gripes: 1. Loading screens EVERYWHERE. Every building. Sooo annoying for a simple 2D game. 2. Too much blah blah blah blah. If I want to read a book, I'll read a book thank you very much. The story is boring and drawn-out. Screen after screen after screen of boring text. 3. Too little combat. I liked attacking the keep near Gilded Vale. I like the dungeon below the stronghold. But this is no hack and slash. 4. Combat is tedious. The pause-action system just doesn't seem to work. You can't rest much outside of inns, so you tend to set party AI to not use abilities/spells that require resting. Which makes combat boring. 5. Stupid party AI. Spellcaster will stand still in front of melee characters, blocking their path. Melee guys will get stuck and unable to fight. Really? It's 2018, and you can't figure out pathing AI? 6. No XP for monsters. After killing the first handful of each monster, you get zero XP. Booooring. 7. Bad itemization. Everything looks the same, stats are boring, I'm not seeing anything interesting or unique. 8. Stronghold. Do I have to say more? NWN2 already did this. It was slow, but bearable there. Here, it just seems like a chore. A cheap copycat chore. 9. For a game that is so highly touted for its story, I found myself wanting a generic "bad guy." It's just too slow, with meaningless blah blah blah and after 2 weeks of playing I still didn't have a clue other than that I was on some yawn-inducing "hollowborn" story. Come on, give me some baddie to beat up. Never thought I'd say that as I usually like stories, but Obsidian bored me to death. 10. All brand-new, difficult, boring lore. I'd rather have Forgotten Realms, thank you very much. A shot and a miss. Sorry.
D: OS EE is a welcome addition to the turn-based RPG school of games. Pros: - Nice graphics. - The environment detail is nicely done. Each location looks great. - Turn-based combat letting you plan your moves and attacks. - Good voice acting. - Your characters can be a mix of classes... you are not pigeon-holed into tank, cleric, etc. Cons: - Gets tedious and boring toward the end. - The plot is really bad... - The cut scenes are poorly animated. - Crafting is pointless for most items. - Documentation is sorely lacking. E.g. finding out what the different classes and spells do requires you to search online. - The camera should let you zoom out more.
