Soulless: Ray of Hope

Beautiful platformer but clunky controls

My Video Review can be found here: https://youtu.be/5S3nI-yHUZw The game drags you in because of its touching story and graphics. Thanks to its reasonable difficulty you will not lose your nerves and will be driven by curiosity what comes next. The only big minus I can see there is control along with design of some obstacles that will force you to repeat some parts many times. Pros: - nice artistic graphics - atmospheric environment - story - level design - close checkpoints Cons: - controls responsivity - design of some obstacles I am giving it Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father's Index 7 out of 10.

Mother Russia Bleeds

Great beat 'em up from terrible times

My Video Review is available here: https://youtu.be/vlc7I4OxFa0 Is Mother Russia Bleeds the game that is worth your money and attention? There are many pros in it - disturbing story, number of possible attacks, character selection, number of weapons, the drugs using mechanics, variety of enemies and environments, responsive controls, challenging yet not frustrating difficulty, beautiful graphics, dynamic music and realistic sounds. What are the downsides? The explicit violence and drugs using that make the game inappropriate for kids, the absence of character development and also the absence of dubbing. There is a local co-op multiplayer which for sure makes the game even more entertaining if you find the right person to play with as this is the kind of game that your kids should stay out of. Pros: - story - number of attacks - character selection - number of weapons - drugs using mechanics - variety of enemies and environments - controls - reasonable difficulty - graphics - music and sounds Cons: - inappropriate for kids - no character development - absence of dubbing Mother Russia Bleeds is as rough and unpleasant as life in Soviet Russia was (at least for most of the people) but it is also funny and addictive (and not because of drug usage) and the game itself does not have many cons. Although it is not the game suitable for family playing it is still a good game for fellow gaming fathers and their (adult) friends and I am therefore giving it Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s index 8+ out of 10 - recommended.

Sine Mora EX

Original shmup ruined by bad decisions

My Video Review is available here: https://youtu.be/1STDwo2CZS4 Can I recommend Sine Mora EX to non-hardcore players with their families? There are for sure many pros - original game concept based on time, useful power-ups, time manipulation ability, wide variety of enemies, variability of the environment, precise controls, beautiful graphics and atmospheric sounds along with dubbing. However, there are also the cons that I can hardly overlook - hard to follow story, frequent flying through the narrow caves, the punishing difficulty making you repeat the whole game over once you run out of continues and uninspiring music. Sine Mora EX contains local multiplayer and also three other game modes. These features would make the game perfectly suitable for family playing. Unfortunately, the frequent narrow caves along with a limited number of continues making you start the whole game over once you run out of it make the game frustrating rather than enjoyable. Pros: - original game concept - useful power-ups - time manipulation - variability of enemies and environment - controls - graphics - sounds Cons: - confusing story - flying through narrow caves - punishing difficulty - music It is a shame that a couple of bad design decisions ruined the game with such original mechanics and beautiful presentation. With a heavy heart I am giving Sine Mora EX Thumbs Down and VideoGaming Father’s Index 5+ out of 10 - not recommended.

Adventures of Chris

Great story based action platformer!

My Video Review is available here: https://youtu.be/0Wk8GyEYNMM Is Adventures of Chris the right game to be played by fellow Gaming Fathers and their families? There are many things that I like about the game - inventive story, sense of humor, system of skills and upgrades, variability of environment, good level design, optional level of difficulty, responsive controls and nice graphics. There are also some things that I dislike - frustrating boss battles along with the inability to shoot vertically, lack of game modes - there is just a story, absence of dubbing and also absence of local multiplayer that would make the game more suitable for family playing. Pros: - story - sense of humor - skills and upgrade system - game variability - level design - optional level of difficulty - controls - graphics Cons: - some boss battles - inability to shoot vertically - lack of game modes - absence of dubbing - no local multiplayer In general, I have really enjoyed playing Adventures of Chris and I would not hesitate to give it an even higher score if there were local multiplayer and dubbed characters. Like this I am giving it Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 8 out of 10 - recommended!

Broforce

Celebration of good old action genre!

My Video Review can be found here: https://youtu.be/IpCj1EYWsTg Broforce is a typical “from fans for fans” type of game and as I said before if you have grown up on action movies and TV series from the 80’s and 90's you will enjoy it even more as you will find there many pop culture allusions. What I like about the game - funny retro atmosphere, wide variety of heroes with strong personalities and various skills and weapons, level design that makes you not only shoot but also thinking a bit, destructible and interactive environment, reasonable difficulty, responsive controls, stylish audiovisuals and the presence of local multiplayer. There are really not many things that I dislike - maybe the absence of dubbing as I think that some one liners would make the game atmosphere even better, more distinctive music in 80’s style and higher variability of enemies. Is it suitable for family playing? Well, there is a local multiplayer so if you get over the blood and violent nature of the game you can play it with 10+ years old kids. After all, thanks to the pixel graphics and sense of humor it is not such a drastic game. Pros: - atmosphere - wide variety of heroes - level design - environment - difficulty - controls - audiovisuals - local multiplayer Cons: - absence of dubbing - more distinctive music - variability of enemies I have enjoyed playing Broforce a lot and thus I am giving the game Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 9 out of 10 - highly recommended.

BLACKHOLE

Tough but fair puzzle platformer

My Video Review can be found here: https://youtu.be/DNpoxcLgX7I The developers have made the game challenging yet not frustrating. There are many pros like smart level design, nice graphics and music, precise control, sense of humor and the options how to set up the game to be enjoyable for almost everyone. I do not see many cons here, maybe the difficulty sometimes, the absence of some living enemy creatures or the the local multiplayer. Blackhole is suitable for kids and might develop their motoric abilities and logical thinking. Pros: - sense of humor - level design - graphics - story - control - game options Cons: - difficulty - lack of enemies - no multiplayer I am giving Blackhole Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father's Index 8 out of 10.

LIMBO

Atmospheric with tons of original ideas

My Video Review can be found here: https://youtu.be/FlJ8XIs9c-o Has Limbo convinced me about its qualities? Does it really deserve the high rating and mark of one of the best games in the genre? The answers are simple - yes and yes for sure. On the plus side there is the great atmosphere, tons of original ideas, dark story that can be interpreted many ways, reasonable difficulty, responsive controls and audiovisual presentation. There are only a few cons - absence of music and maybe also some narration, no further development of the main character - meaning the absence of RPG elements and violence on children that makes this game unsuitable for family playing. Pros: - atmosphere - many original ideas - story - difficulty - controls - audiovisuals Cons: - absence of music - no RPG elements - violence on children Limbo is a real masterpiece that I have been enjoying every second and could not wait to see what other great ideas would come in the next scene. It is not far from perfection. I am giving Limbo Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 9 out of 10 - highly recommended.

Feudal Alloy

Interesting idea spoiled by bad design

My Video Review can be found here: https://youtu.be/UutHrCOqXLU It’s clear from the very beginning that Feudal Alloy is one of those small games that have been developed with love and passion. I appreciate the original main character, quite innovative fighting mechanics, real effort to create metroidvania with RPG elements, reasonable difficulty, hand drawn graphics and medieval-like soundtrack. Unfortunately, all these good things were spoiled by a generic environment that makes the game repetitive very soon, absence of appropriate map, uninteresting enemies, insufficient effect of the upgrades, sometimes inaccurate controls and mediocre sounds. Pros: - main character - fighting mechanics - difficulty - graphics - soundtrack Cons: - environment - repetitive - absence of appropriate map - enemies - upgrades - sometimes controls - sounds It is not easy for me but I have to give this game Thumb Down and VideoGaming Father’s Index 5- out of 10 - not recommended.

Capsized

Platforming with controversial controls

My Video Review can be found here: https://youtu.be/WhgjqbSxMVk Capsized was not an easy game for me to review. I admit that I even put it aside twice before I started to play it properly. But for some reason it always dragged me back to give it one more chance yet. On the positive side there are good level design, some refreshing ideas, variable enemies and weapons, nice graphics, effects and soundtrack, challenging and after all not so frustrating difficulty and grappling hook. There are also negatives like not so interesting story, monotonous environment and last but not least the controls that you would really need some time to get used to. Pros: - level design - refreshing ideas - variability of enemies and weapons - audiovisual side - challenging yet not frustrating most of the time - local multiplayer - grappling hook! Cons: - story - variability of the environment - controls As the positive sides still prevail and the game managed to drag me in after a couple of attempts I am giving it Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 7- out of ten - recommended with warning.

The Messenger

Back to 90's with surprising twist

My Video Review can be found here: https://youtu.be/GJMydX5KkxE The Messenger is a great tribute to side-scrolling action platformers from the 90's enhanced by new refreshing ideas. There are many positives in the game like good level design, RPG elements, variable environments, challenging yet not frustrating difficulty, responsive controls, challenging boss battles, nice graphics, great soundtrack and fundamental twist in the game making it virtually 2 games in one. On the negative side are not very variable enemies and not so inventive story and maybe the absence of co-op multiplayer which would make it more suitable for family playing. Is it suitable for children? Well, definitely not for the pre-school ones but children at the age of 10+ should enjoy it. Pros: - level design - RPG elements - variable environments - reasonable difficulty - controls - boss battles - graphics and soundtrack - 2 games in one Cons: - variability of enemies - story - absence of local co-op I have enjoyed playing the Messenger so I am giving it Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s index 8+ out of 10 - recommended!
