Schein

Atmospheric but repetitive platformer

My Video Review can be found here: https://youtu.be/_xwtw4tvyok The story, interesting game concept using alternate dimension, good systems of checkpoints, responsive control and atmosphere are the pros of the game. On the other side are low variability of environment, lack of additional game content like character development and puzzles resulting in game being repetitive after some time and rather high difficulty. Because of it sad and dark atmosphere the game is not very suitable for kids. Pros: - Story - Game concept using alternate dimension - System of checkpoints - Responsive control - Atmosphere Cons: - Variability of environment - No character development or puzzles to solve - Becomes repetitive after some time - High difficulty Schein is not flawless but I can say that I enjoyed the time when I played it and thus I am giving it Thumbs Up and 7 out of 10.

Evan's Remains

Minimalistic but smart and atmospheric

My Video Review is available here: https://youtu.be/Pj_M5VXlnqc Is Evan’s Remains the game that is worth investing your money and time in? One can find many positives there - mysterious complex story, relaxing gameplay, puzzle design, gradual learning curve, responsive controls, beautiful graphics and nice music. There are also few negatives that I have found while playing - the puzzles become quite repetitive sooner or later due to simplicity of their design, the adventure lovers might not like frequent puzzle platforming sequences and vice versa, hard to follow for children and absence of dubbing. Pros: - story - relaxing - puzzle design - gradual learning curve - controls - graphics - music Cons: - creeping stereotype - the mix of genres is not for everyone - hard to follow for children - no dubbing If you are looking for a pure adventure or pure puzzle platformer better look somewhere else. But if you would like to try a puzzle platformer with a strong story you are on the right address here. I personally have enjoyed playing Evan's Remains and I am therefore giving it Thumb Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 7+ out of 10 - recommended.

Yoku's Island Express

Relaxing metroidvania and unique concept

My Video Review is available here: https://youtu.be/2gkFQb7v-Gc Have I enjoyed playing Yoku's Island Express? The answer is positive. At least most of the time. I really like the positive relaxed atmosphere of the game, sense of humor, many original refreshing ideas, variability of the environment, user friendly controls, beautiful graphics, relaxing music and sounds. What I do not like so much are confusing game map which causes tiresome wandering sometimes and creeping stereotype that come sooner or later despite all original ideas in the game due to the simple game mechanics. Maybe some RPG elements would make it more motivating yet. And of course the local co-op would suit the game as well. Relaxed atmosphere makes the game suitable for family playing but as many puzzles are not so trivial and you need to read to know what to do I would only recommend it for school aged kids. Pros: - relaxing atmosphere - sense of humor - refreshing ideas - environment - controls - audiovisuals Cons: - confusing map - creeping stereotype - absence of dubbing Yoku’s Island Express is definitely not a flawless game but as it has many features making it suitable for playing by fellow Gaming Fathers and their families I am giving it Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 7+ out of 10 - recommended with some discount.

Agent A: A puzzle in disguise

One more puzzle and I will go to sleep

My Video Review is available here: https://youtu.be/a2L3n_hE8iA Has Agent A: A puzzle in disguise succeeded on its mission to bring atmospheric espionage adventure with thrilling story and well designed puzzles to the screens of our computers? There are many pros on the game - catching story worth to follow, charismatic main villain, sense of humor, well designed puzzles forcing you to use keen eye, logic and memory; well balanced difficulty of puzzles, user friendly controls, stylish 1960’s like graphics, music inspired by espionage themes, dubbing of Ruby La Rouge. You won’t really find many cons here - maybe the optional hardcore difficulty to provide a challenge for hardcore players and more charismatic main hero with dubbed voice and humorous one-liners. Pros: - story - main villain - sense of humor - puzzle design - balanced difficulty - controls - graphics - music - dubbing of main villain Cons: - no real challenge for hardcore players - not too charismatic main hero without dubbing Agent A: A puzzle in disguise delivers almost perfect 1960’s espionage game atmosphere spiced up by the charismatic main villain, well designed puzzles where you need to pay attention to details and use your memory and intellect and all of these wrapped up into great audiovisuals. Although purely a single player game I think that you will also have fun while playing with your family and it is definitely a good game for training memory and logical thinking. I have really enjoyed playing this game in a style “one more puzzle to crack and I will go to sleep” and thus I am giving it Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 8+ out of 10 - highly recommended!

Golf Club Nostalgia

More about the atmosphere than the golf

My Video Review can be found here: https://youtu.be/Vy6KTkhk1ZU Is Golf Club Wastelands the game experience that one shouldn’t miss or is it just a waste of time? Here are the game pros - three storylines with at least two worth to follow, inventive level design, variable environments, perfect dystopian atmosphere, beautiful graphics, great music, narration and fully dubbed people’s stories broadcasted by The Radio Nostalgia From Mars. And here are the game downsides - not very interesting story of the main hero that needs to be unlocked, unpredictable power of strokes that changes by some non-linear curve, absence of skills or other RPG elements that could be developed, no information about the pars and no score or online leaderboard where one could compare his result with others. Pros: - three storylines - level design - variety of environment - dystopian atmosphere - graphics - music - The Radio Nostalgia from Mars Cons: - storyline of the main hero is not so interesting - unpredictable power of strokes - no skills or other RPG elements - absence of online leaderboard - no explicit information about pars - absence of local multiplayer This game could be much better with the predictable controls, some RPG elements, some score system with online leaderboard and also the presence of some form of a local multiplayer as a separate game mode. I have still enjoyed this game but ironically more because of the game atmosphere and radio broadcast than the golf itself. I am therefore giving this game Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 6+ out of 10 - still recommended but with some bigger discount.

MouseCraft

Lemmings + Tetris together = it works!

Here is my MouseCraft Video Review: https://youtu.be/kQ-RtPl9AuI Has Mousecraft succeeded with the bold idea to combine seemingly incompatible puzzle genres as Lemmings and Tetris? There are many positives on the game - original idea that works, adding new features as the player progresses through the game, good level design, gradually increasing learning curve, challenging yet not frustrating difficulty, user friendly interface and controls and beautiful graphics. I have not found many downsides there - dull story, rather generic music and absence of some form of local multiplayer. Thanks to its easy accessibility, non-violent character, short levels and good puzzle design Mousecraft is definitely the kind of game suitable for family playing. Pros: - original and working idea - continuously adding new features - level design - gradually increasing learning curve - difficulty - interface and controls - graphics Cons: - story - music - no local multiplayer I like the developers that have enough courage to experiment with genres and combine them into something new that seemingly cannot work. Crunching Koalas have done the great job this time and realized one of such ideas almost flawlessly. I am therefore giving Mousecraft Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 8+ out of 10 - recommended!

Q.U.B.E.: Director's Cut

Atmospheric 3D puzzle platformer

My Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut Video Review: https://youtu.be/qNBKK0932dE Has Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut met my expectations for atmospheric science fiction game with challenging puzzles to solve? It has unarguably many pluses - atmospheric story worth following, great level and puzzle design, easy to learn but hard to master concept, many new ideas driving your forward, challenging difficulty, responsive controls, nice looking graphics, atmospheric music and sounds and great fully-voiced narration. There are only a few downsides - the absence of tutorial for casual players, the environment is maybe too sterile, lack of new skills or light RPG elements and slippery feeling of platforms sometimes. There is no local multiplayer in the game but I can hardly complain about it here as it is a pure atmospheric single player experience. It is still suitable for family playing as there is no violence in the game and the game can develop your children’s ability of spatial thinking and also thinking forward. Plus you can show your little ones how the ideally cleaned room should look like by example of the game environment. Pros: - atmospheric story - level and puzzle design - easy to learn hard to master concept - still serving new ideas - difficulty - controls - graphics - music and sounds - narration Cons: - no proper tutorial - sterile environment - absence of RPG elements - slippery feeling of some platforms Q.U.B.E: Director’s cut is able to drag you in thanks to its interesting science fiction story, challenging puzzles and great level design that teases your curiosity about what comes next which naturally drives you forward. I can say that I have enjoyed this strong single player puzzling experience and I am therefore giving Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 8+ out of 10 - recommended!

Stealth Bastard Deluxe Complete Edition

Nice stealth platformer, no local co-op

My Stealth Bastard Deluxe Video Review: https://youtu.be/N1hvvCaCyeA Can I recommend Stealth Bastard Deluxe to casual players and their families with clear conscience? There are for sure many things that I like about the game - good level design, many interesting puzzles to solve, functional system of light and dark, challenging yet not frustrating difficulty, responsive and user friendly controls, online leaderboard, beautiful pixel art graphics and atmospheric music. There are also some things that I dislike - lack of proper story, trial and error approach, necessity to have the brightness almost on the maximum to see some areas and the absence of RPG elements that would enhance the gameplay. Stealth Bastard Deluxe is suitable for family playing if you have at least 10 years old kids as the depiction of your hero’s deaths is quite explicit and the difficulty would be also too high for younger kids. Unfortunately, there is no local co-op in the game which would make the game even better. Like this you can still compete to see who can finish the level in better time and get the higher place in the leaderboard. The good thing is that the game has a level editor and support of community levels so the new content which can make the game last longer is guaranteed. Pros: - level design - puzzles - functional dynamic lightning - difficulty - controls - leaderboard - graphics - music - community levels Cons: - lack of story - trial and error approach - too dark sometimes - absence of RPG elements - no local multiplayer Despite of many deaths I have really enjoyed Stealth Bastard Deluxe thanks to the instant gameplay, inventive level design and interesting puzzle to solve and let’s be honest thanks to the presence of leaderboard as well and thus I am giving the game Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 8 out of 10 - recommended.

Star Vikings Forever

Humorous puzzle RPG with mobile controls

More in my Video Review: https://youtu.be/BilYAP_b_Ls Is Star Vikings Forever just a cheap mobile port or does it have enough qualities to offer a worthwhile experience even on computers? There are many pros - humorous story, funny and distinctive game characters, more possible solutions for each puzzle, replayability thanks to procedurally generated levels, variety of skill upgrades and power-ups, difficulty suitable for casual players, beautiful graphics, nice to hear music and sounds. However, one can also find some cons - slow progress of unlocking new characters, a little bit clunky controls suitable rather for cellphones than PCs, absence of dubbing and creeping stereotype resulting from simplicity of the game concept. Star Vikings Forever is definitely a family friendly game thanks to short levels, casual difficulty and omnipresent humor. Pros: - humor - game characters - more possible solutions - replayability - upgrades and power-ups - casual difficulty - graphics, music and sounds Cons: - slow progress of unlocking characters - controls are rather designed for mobiles - no dubbing - creeping stereotype If you are looking for an easy to learn puzzle game that can be funny even when played in short seances and is surprisingly complex in its core you are on the right address. Star Vikings Forever is an ideal game for casual family playing and I have enjoyed it despite its flaws and the fact that it will probably not last for too long and thus I am giving it Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 7 out of 10 - recommended with some discount.

A Boy and His Blob

Cute puzzle platformer, clunky controls

My Video Review is available here: https://youtu.be/uGuH0mxL5XU Is A Boy and His Blob a game that is worth trying or should you better look somewhere else? The game undoubtedly has many positives - original game concept, imaginative level design, interesting puzzles, relaxed game atmosphere, balanced difficulty, beautiful and cute graphics and nice orchestral music. However, one can also find some downsides that make that game experience not so pleasant - no story that one could follow, the lack of tutorial, clunky controls, long waiting for blob sometimes and technical issues with graphical settings. Thanks to the short levels, not so high difficulty and cute graphics the game is suitable for family playing and school aged kids will for sure enjoy the game and practice their logical thinking. It’s a pity that there is not any cooperative multiplayer that would make the family fun while playing even better. Pros: - game concept - level design - puzzles - game atmosphere - difficulty - suitable for children - graphics - music Cons: - no story - no tutorial - controls - waiting for blob - technical issues - no local multiplayer I think that this game is a worthy successor to the old game for the NES console with the same name and despite struggling with setting the graphical setting in the beginning and regular struggling with the game controls I have enjoyed the game and felt really relaxed while playing. I am therefore giving A Boy and His Blob Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 7 out of 10 - recommended with some discount.
