Best game I've played in a long time.
This review is based on 216 hours on Steam followed by 18 hours on GOG. Adventures of Chris is an Adventure Platformer game inspired by the classic games from the 90s and while it draws a lot of inspiration from the classics, it manages to do its own thing with style. I love the ‘accidental hero’ concept, to have a ’nobody’ grow as a person and gain confidence (as well as powers) really adds to the feel-good experience. When it comes to difficulty levels, AoC is quick to deliver four different settings right off the bat, ranging from can't die (Ridiculously Easy) to take twice as much damage (Hard For No Reason) and it doesn't end there as most power-ups in the game are completely optional, giving the player a chance to finish the games with min% (and gain an achievement while doing so). For those who finish Story Mode and wish for a harder challenge there is Mean Mode with new dialogue, more enemies, spikes, gaps and harder boss fights. Hey, why not add to the challenge and play Mean Mode, Hard For No Reason, min%? Now in the end, what i love most about Adventures of Chris is how it brings back the fun of retro gaming, yes it can be frustrating at the harder settings but it feels so good to have a real modern retro game to just enjoy. And isn't that what gaming should be all about? To have fun.
