To sum it up, tryanny is game that is excellently written....when there is writing to enjoy. However the game feels like it is missing a decent amount of content. I imagine this is from the game once being longer, with planned content cut for time/money. The opening conquest section is interesting, and does affect a number of factors. I wish it did a bit more however. The world itself is fascinating, as you help an evil overlord conquer what remains of the resistance. Allowing you to be humane or inhumane as you wish. There are a vast number of choices to make during the conquest so it can take awhile just to get your character made. The plot restricts the amount of places you can visit in one particular playthrough. This in turn, ensures that in order to experience all the areas of the game you'll need multiple playthroughs. This is however somewhat alleviated in that choosing a story path in the first chapter changes how you interact with each place. There are four paths you can take, three are pretty obvious, the fourth takes a bit of work. Combat feels better than pillars of eternity from what I played. You can still die on the easy difficulty but most of the time it won't be challenging. Normal will provide decent, but not extreme challenge. I didn't play the harder difficulties. A note for those interested: There is no romance options in the game. While I know a large amount of people don't care for it, while others love them, I personally think its a missed opportunity. Exploring love between villains is hardly ever a thing thats touched upon. I think the setting for tyranny would have provided an excellent one. I feel the game needed more time in the oven to truly become a classic. Its a good game, but you can easily see how it could have been something more.
