Wasteland Remastered

a classic

I don't understand why this game has averaged 2.7 stars out of 5. I played this on my commodore 64 in 1990 and this is exactly the same game but with improved graphics. Some of the other reviewers criticise the terrible UI and they're absolutely right. The UI is terrible but the game itself is still awesome. In my playthrough 35 years after my c64 playthrough, I found it necessary to look up some hints in a couple of spots but I almost finished this in 1990, that's pre-internet, with zero hints. So it is doable. My first playthrough in 1990 was a pirated copy that crashed halfway through base Cochise.

Invisible Inc.

frustrating........

Not my cup of tea. Way too hard for me. I was obliterated within the first couple of missions. Reading the other reviews from geniuses who finished the beginner game within two hours makes me wonder whether they're some sort of superintelligent AI and not actually human. If you don't mind a bit of frustration, then buy it but I prefer games that aren't brutally punishing.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

mods work for me

I have read lots of reviews of mods not working with the gog version. They work fine for me. Just make sure you download the special edition version of the mods and go to user/appdata/local/skyrim and copy all the files to user/appdata/local/skyrim gog version I played Morrowind when it came out and so far, it seems that Skyrim is just as good.

For The King

NOT DRM FREE

The games itself is great and I would award it four stars if not for the DRM. If the offline installer file is downloaded and run, the game freezes at the intro screen. Downloading and installing it with gog galaxy works but my gog.com user ID is at the top of the page. This implies that the game needs an online connection. When I delete gog galaxy, the game freezes again. I would argue that this is DRM and no different than needing the steam client in order for it to run.

Wasteland 2 Director's Cut Digital Deluxe Edition

review of wasteland 2 (patch4)

I haven't seen any other game on gog.com that has attracted such mixed reviews. Seems with this one you either love it or hate it. I'm not sure exactly what people are picking on as I am one of the people who love it. I backed it right from the start on kickstarter. I played the original wasteland in 1990 when I was in year 10 at high school. The original was awesome and I was totally addicted to it, couldn't put it down. Now, of course, it looks its age and graphically is virtually unplayable. Does the new Wasteland 2 have the same feel to it? I would say that it does. Having never played any of the Fallouts I'm probably the only person who isn't comparing it to Fallout 2. The fact that turn based battles have made a comeback is fantastic. I much prefer this to the real time who's attacking who and what's going on free for all of Neverwinter Nights 2. I'm not sure why the major publishers ditched them in the first place but I'm glad the smaller publishers have brought them back. I'll indulge in a little nostalgia here and say that these turn based skirmishes remind me of the glorious Death Knights of Krynn, Dark Queen of Krynn, etc that I played as a kid on the C64. I'd say that Brian Fargo really delivered on this one. Too many early access games and kickstarter projects collapse in a heap, just look at the fiasco with Elite: dangerous cancelling the offline mode! But not Wasteland 2. This game is exactly what I expected it to be and what I hoped it would be. I think that all the people bagging this game were expecting Fallout 4. If that's you, stay away because apparently its not. If you are looking for an awesome turn based RPG and don't have any misconceptions about this being Fallout then give it a go.

FRACT OSC

great game

I liked the look of Fract OSC when it first appeared on GOG. I held off purchasing it, read all the reviews on IGN, Gamespot, etc. The reviews I read emphasised that the game is really about exploration. Some criticised it for the fact that the only real reward is some sort of musical jingle when you solve a puzzle. All that is true, but you could say the same of Morrowind (my all time favourite game). When I killed some mega tough enemy all I got were a few animated sword slashes and some loot. With Fract OSC its musical jingles which actually seem to be more tangible anyway. I must say that I'm slightly addicted to it. I can't seem to stop playing it. My only real criticisms are that it might be quite short (I've already got most of the synth unlocked after 7 hours or so) and I am suffering from the crackling sound that others have been reporting. All in all its 4 stars for me.

The Real Texas

overlooked gem

I bought this game from the developer on launch day. I totally loved it and finished it, so having spent around 20 hours on it, I hope I'm able to give a good review. It seems to be an overlooked gem which is what prompted me to write this review. I've seen some reviewers criticise the graphics and that's a fair point, however, I found the look to be a bit psychedelic and didn't mind it at all. There is a sense of humour wound through the whole game and the game itself reminds me of Ultima 7. It doesn't look like it but it feels a bit like it. Its an RPG of sorts with some great puzzles thrown in. I've never seen an RPG with these sorts of puzzles before. There was one section involving traversing a maze of forcefields that had me stuck for awhile and I enjoyed it. Don't judge it on graphics alone, that's a bit shallow. It's a great game.

Legend of Grimrock

a true successor to CSB

I remember playing Chaos strikes back on my Amiga as a kid. I actually finished it too. But given the diabolical nature of the puzzles I did use the hint oracle more than I would have liked. Chaos strikes back is one of those games that really had me addicted. Legend of Grimrock is so similar. The rune based magic, trying random combinations to try to cook up spells, the puzzles. Love it. I have a feeling that the JerrySeinfeld character who gave it one star didn't really understand what the game was actually like and expected another Skyrim. Personally I'd love to see Almost human release expansions for this. I'd certainly fork out more money for them
