Simple gameplay, and yet simplicity not being the bane of fun. Easy to learn, easy to play. Nice demo, not the usual ship for most emos. I don't toil much with demo's but this kept me going for at least 10+ hours. If the actual game's pricing doesn't go overboard, I'll buy it. Adequately named cooking stuff.
If you want a better version of this game go with Surviving Mars instead. The menus use constraints. Instead of leaving the menu when clicking on something else, the menu stays open, does not allow camera movement and whatnot. The buildings use constraints, both in placement as well as in orientation, which is then only applied when you connect something, which doesn't allow for longer tube connections, usually increasing in cost when lng, but not in this game. The either building close together or not should be up to the builder, not a constraint. Also, when placing a building the boxes present should not disallow placement. SInce when was it impossible to build anything anywhere because there's a box of goods in the way. Which brings me to the boxes themselves, which you may destroy, as the only option to remove them, blinking them out of existence, which then oddly IS possible. And there's more, but really, I was hoping for another good base building game, instead the constraints of imaginery kind kind killed it. The better version is indeed Surviving Mars. What a bummer.. (Optically not bad though, and if they ever remove those fugly constraints, it would be a nice game.)
Let's just say short but sweet, really. And yes, getting the peeps to survive is both really easy and hard. I'd say get it on discount, personally I bought it for I think $3. And that's well worth it. It's easy to learn. It's got that "ships..." when you fail, which will be many times. And finally the "..was that it ? I could do it a hundred times..", and yet once that victory has come, you'll go "let's go again" and fail.. I find the gameconcept nice since it's a survival like none other. It could be easily expanded on though. But I think that would change this game into another. One tip: Try using the spacebar a lot. It halts the game.
Way better than expected, really... I played thousands of games, and this is one of handfull that actually managed to surprise me... At first you may think it's rinse repeat kinda deal, but then there's curveball here and there that keeps you awake. Then when the latter parts enter ur on the edge of ur seat again... Usually it's a slow decline to *yawn** in games, but not this one.. Pricing is kinda high for the graphics, but not the gameplay. To make sure you get a better deal, wait for the sales. Personally I never got a better deal for 7 bucks.
Umm..lousy game interface, forced shabby overhead view..what I thought could be a nice survival game, instead came out like pike dream. 1) With most top down view games, there's the ability to look straight down. Not here. Also, the 'auto' camera, SOO not helping. Specially since you need to know where what is. One forced camera change and voila, where that enemy again ? 2) With most RPG like games, you can set up characters (allies and all) to have certain gear on them. Not here. Here you have to pack you main character with stuff, so you can exchange it in the field ? dafq ? In order to get 4 allies exactly the way you want it that means going to a location 4 times minimum. Also, this prevents losing gear at the shelter, so your inventory is NOT full. 3) The gui SUCKS !. Instead of being a lil versatile and allowing for common stuff to happen on the fly, you gotta go through 'channels'. Let's say your in the equipment exchange screen, and you wanna unload before giving someone else something. Nu-uh, you gotta exit first, then go to the inventory screen, then unload, then go back to the exchange screen, and then finally you can give someone something you don't need to carry. Can you imagine ? Sure I'll give you that nice shotgun, loaded, but to do that we gotta go into a place somewhere first, fight off some potenetial things, and after that you'll get the shotgun ok ? Also, it unload to the next encounter, if not equipped. LOL, this is SOO halfbaked, I'd fire the one who came up with it.. Really, if you're searching for a nice survival game, try Sheltered or Neo-Scavenger. Also, dispite promises to change stuff, it's been almost 3 years since..so..don't count on changes.. Maybe if the source code would be available, then this would make a nice foundation for a community project. I mean the graphics and stuff are not that bad, but implementation of stuff..HORRIBLE !!!
The thing with this game is, for a moment it shows potential.. Then there's a few small letdowns, and subsequently it drops off more and more.. If you want a nice hacking game try Uplink instead. For thsoe interested: 1) The cases built is kinda floppy.. There should be like a progress inicoator or something with a 100% when all the parts needed to get it done, being needed to add. Instead you get a pick and choose from the parts (but never the whole) of the case. Most annoying. 2) The 'search' for clues is kinda lame. There's no diversion, no misleads and certainly not a multitude.. You end up simply reading and typing the one lead you have.. pring fro Ip adress and iphack fro the actual 'hack'..not much at all.. 3) Lacks tutorial, but it was pick-up able..(thanx to other games I played that were a bit similar) In any case, I only played the demo, but it kinda was enough.. Graphics aren't that great, but a good game doesn't need that much anyway..too bad this isn't one.. Compared to Uplink, this game has a little better graphics, but way less game.. Uplink was great, (I still play it sometimes, just to try the bank hack with an unupgraded Gateway :D ) Nah..this game needs a kick upstairs..it could have been much much much better.. (kinda was hoping it was..building a case a lil more CSI style would work..) (Better hacking mechanism, like point on IP and click to connect, leaving the 'ping' out..) Anyway..maybe it'll be better some day, but right now..30 mins in..I'm "Nah..got better things to do.." In the case it does change into something better, change into "Mainling 2.0" so people can see it. Laterz, ZMacZ
Simply put, compared to the orignal UFO - Enemy unknown (MIcroprose 1994), it does NOT weigh up.. Yes..I know, it's mostly the same on the ground, except: - stuff gets obscured that shouldn't, never a problem with that in the 1994 version.. - LOS is practically nothing, while you CAN shoot further..so not good.. - the right click function oughta be move only..other actions selecteable by GUI icon... (i opened so many doors that oughta be closed, and closed too many that oughta have stayed open..) - the weapon drops are not for keeps ?..wth ?!?..the whole income stuff is goners..,I used to pick up everything I could get my hands on..now for a complete intact UFO..no engines, no navigation, no nada..handfull of alloys ? - the traps you can make in the original are not plausible here..(setting up shop with full squad outside the UFO, the first one to stick his nose out would get blasted..but no go here..) - the base defense layout is almost to cry for...I used to put all the elements with surface access on one side, with only one corridor (bottleneck), usually the elevator itself, so a nice big fat ambush would clean out any incoming attacks..I never needed base defenses (in fact I always welcomed their base assaults with fireworks..heh..) One tiny improvement is the aerial combat system...I like the russian method (carrot and big stick)..works great.. (but still..there's room for improvement there too...and yes..I have suggestions there..) In all, it does NOT compare to the 1994 version.(maybe it'll come here one day I HOPE SO !) BUT !!! If you can't play the old one (which is why bought this one YOU WILL be entertained !!! (and when you played it for some time, maybe when the old one comes, you'll see past the somewhat blockiness, and buy that one too, and subsequently enjoy the UFO experience even more..) Note that I did NOT pay full price..it was on sale..so when on sale, still money well spent..
You want a nice thrill ? go hard and chop ur way past the no ammo.. Yes..plenty of save/loads...but hey..if it was easy why play a FPS ?.. I had this game and yes, it's a long battle..but that's what FPS is for right ? Works decently..has ok graphics.. When on sale specially..get it play it, and enjoy the moments where you did the impossible by trying 100 times in a row...(that would be where you save with next to zero health and have to millimeter ur way through to the health pack..guuuudd..) FPS..it's no fun when it easeh.. (and there's value in ur money..cheap game+sale = hours of :P D: :D :DDD :P :D
