Over the years I have learned not to follow titles but the team of developers instead. Baldur's Gate was made by a team of gamers for gamers competent people that care about what they do for a living. Check out Divinity Original Sin I and II if you want more quality gaming from the same team that made Bladur's Gate III.
I played this game excessive amounts when I was a kid, just a great game made great by large part because of the story and writing. The EE version adds new characters and writing, its horrible just bad so bad I would 1 star this review but can't bring myself to do that as if you ignore all new 'content' the great game is there. I have the benefit of knowing what is part of the real game so its easy for me to ignore all the added dialog and poor just horribly written new characters.
For CRPG vets has everything one could want. This will be one of those games I will dust off years down the road and replay as I tend to do with Neverwinter Nights II and Baldurs Gate series. Story is good, companions are well written believable, combat is what one would expect the character building options surpass even Neverwinter II leading to some comically powerful builds, that's a huge plus for me few RPGs let you truly create something unique and powerful. I even enjoyed the kingdom building aspect after a little warming up to the idea.
