Hollow Knight: Silksong

The developers clearly love thier game

The game is clearly made with huge amounts of love from the team that worked on it. I have enjoyed the game so far but as someone that doesn't have any experience wit the Holow Knight franchise, and barely any experience with this type of game, i have struggled to progress. There is no hand holding or real explanation for mechanics. I wasted hours, trying to find a path forward and needed to be told by a friend that the flowers can be used to jump for additional height. This happened a second time in Act 2, as the objects blended into the background and weren't clearly interactible. Good game that has some rough edges.

Starcom: Unknown Space

Fun space explorer

I'm enjoying it. Strikes a good balance of different mechanics.

Riven

I don't get the hype

I got the game for 30% off and played through it, I don't understand why they're charging so much for the game. There are games that offer much more content for the same price. The world is lovely, but as someone who hasn't played any of the other games, I’m not sure why I’m meant to care about the "good guys" or dislike the "bad guys". I read the books and journals in the world. I also have no idea how I know the "good guys" and why I’m helping them or WTF the ending is meant to mean and why that happens to me. Too often, controls are janky, buttons are incredibly hard to see and you just start whipping your cursors around all the items to see it change shape and indicate something is interactable. This is clearly a game that was designed for a different time and I think if you don't have history with the franchise, simply skip it and find something that respects your time better.

Lumencraft

Fun but eventually repetitive

That game is fun but the core elements get repetitive quickly. You drill, upgrade and defend. Enemy types do have variety, which is good. I’ve played 10 hours and think I’ve experienced everything the game has to offer.

Cyberpunk 2077

Had promise but is shallow

The voice actors and audio design team are the gems of this game. Knocked it out of the god damn park! The game starts in a poor way, i think. I went down the Corpo path and you "start"the game 3 times, befoire you get to the open world stuff. These false starts really frustrated me. The 3 starter arcs don't mean anything beyond some voice lines. Besides the main campaign, which is pretty great, the rest is shallow and empty. Don't scratch too deep or you'll find nothing below. There are a new cool side missions and gigs, but most of them are copy and paste jobs to increase content. I don't regret buying it, but it doesn't have the replay value the Witcher 3 has. I've cleared half the map of missions. Probably won't launch the game again till a DLC comes out, becuase there isn't anything else to explore. I'm not soing a second play through, just to see a slightly different end mission. I'll just watch it on YouTube.

Obduction ®

Took me two attempts

I originally bought Obduction months ago but never got to the end. I hit a puzzle, not sure which and simple gave up. I came back with the determination to finish it this time. Some vague spoilers! A few of the puzzles, like finding the code to the tower elevator and the circle maze seemed exceedingly difficult and I’m not sure why. I had to get the internet’s help to solve the tower code. The game looks nice but load times when swapping worlds is painful, even with my SSD, that’s just for games. The ending was a god damn let down and I feel robbed. I read a lot of the in game material, trying to get a handle on the politics of the world/s. I’m still not sure why it played out like it did. Why did it suddenly go this way and what was the point in doing what the Mofang did. I really wish there was a developer explanation. All that work solving puzzles and you get the endings offered. Blah.

Frostpunk

A hard surface with no depth

I've completed all three game modes. It took me 2 games to get my head around pacing and the learning curb and after that it was fun. I played through the three modes and now there is nothing else to do, except play the same modes again on higher difficulty. I wish they took the same approach as Pharaoh & Cleopatra and allowed you to continue playing once the “objective” is complete. The game was fun but I got 10 hours out of it and there really isn’t much more to get me to go back, so I’ve uninstalled.
