Master of Orion: Collector's Edition

Focus on the game not the past

Wow, all these negative reviews seem not to focus on the game itself but the comparison to its predecessors. I played those old MOO versions and they were good for their time but we have to understand that this is a new age and this game should rather be compared to Galatic Civilizations and Prax, etc. This version of MOO certainly gives a nice feel to it. I only played it once but I am eager to try another race... The economy is working well unlike GC2 where you constantly have to search for anomalies to keep your empire afloat. The empire is manageable, unlike Prax. You don't need a tutorial as it is very straight forward and simple to manage. You can even control your space battles TTW in space and if you do you can shift the balance a great deal. Your evolution and galaxy is manageable even if you don't set everything on auto. Yes, the descriptions are not all that explanatory but 80% fairly understandable. I don't spend much on games but EUR 17 is an acceptable price for a few weekends of joy.

Smugglers V

Unfinished no upgrades

The game starts out quite well. But once you start upgrading your vessel you notice that all the enemy ships are suddenly also stronger. You upgrade again and they upgrade exactly at the same time what a coincidence? No just rubbish programming. Another unfinished blib is that the graphics of the space ships are on a black square. This square is on top of a round border and you can often see the poor craftsmanship. Don't waist your time on this one!

FTL: Advanced Edition

Not finished

If you search on-line for: Why is my mouse is floaty and unresponsive? The developer says: I’m looking into it, but in the meantime usually a driver update (possibly check for Beta drivers if you’re using Windows 8) fixes it for most people. Thanks! That doesn't help me at all!

Master of Orion 3

Tried and tried again but...

In the past I heard great thinks about MOO1 and MOO2 so I bought MOO3. I tried and tried again but the AI, which was planning my routs and construction caused me great pain. Some years later I found GOG and downloaded MOO1 and MOO2 and had was pleased, despite the small maps / short game. So, I read the reviews on MOO3, which tell us that there are mods that can make MOO3 work. Hence I downloaded it and... I tried a few mods and non of them made the game any better. The idea of MOO3 is brilliant but it has this AI that does everything wrong: 1. Vessel routing 2. Construction planning 3. Research tree What to do? MOO1 and MOO2 are too short. Ascendancy is also suffering from a poor AI. GC1 is surpassed by GC2 and both don't have the galaxy effect. To those developers, use the AI from GC, take the map from Ascendancy and add the economy detail of MOO and you would have the perfect space strategy game. ;)

Eschalon: Book II

Nice but imbalanced

First of all I played it from the beginning to the end and I enjoyed it quite a bit. However, I almost didn't. I like RPG's but my characters are usually the warrior/ranger type. However, in this game the advantage clearly lies with magic. Hence, when I noticed the imbalance I chose to play a pure magician with alchemy. It was great fun playing it and I finished the game with spare 10k gold in my pocket. Let's hope the next book will provide a more balanced approach and even it it doesn't just know what choose...

Crusader: No Regret™

Not Jagged Alliance

Considering the good reviews and screen shots I gave it a shot. It looked so much like Jagged Alliance!!! But it only looks like it. It is a runaround first person shooter with poor controls. Probably quite cool with a joystick. But who has that these days? It has little to no strategy elements and is more a simple hit an run game. I would prefer to play Jagged Alliance any day!

Imperialism

Great game but..

Good old days! I loved this game from the start due to the great transporting network and business that one need to setup. It also teaches a great deal about economics. But where is Imperialism 2 which is far better than the original!
