Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri

A Classic, Innovative Tactical Shooter

This is one of the most innovative games of all time. The roots of games like Starsiege: Tribes, Rainbow 6, and Ghost Recon are in this futuristic tactical shooter, and details like being able to order your squad members around, a customizable inventory with things like deployable turrets that let you approach missions in whatever way you like, and the large maps are still ahead of the curve compared to lots of shooters that are released today. The campaign has great missions and hilariously bad FMV cutscenes, so it's a winner all around. The controls are somewhat clunky, but nowhere near as bad as one of Looking Glass's other classic games, System Shock. You'll get used to them sooner or later, and when you do, you'll be rewarded with one of the great tactical shooters ever made.

Escape Goat

Great Puzzle Platformer

Escape Goat has charming graphics (the goat perches adorably on the edge of ledges!), a really great soundtrack, some really good puzzles, and lots of levels with mechanics that change enough to keep it interesting but not so much that you're just continually learning a new game. My only complaint is that some of the puzzles seem to rely a little bit on good timing and platforming skills, but that's mostly because I suck at platformers. If you have good timing and can make a goat jump while you make a magic mouse teleport, you'll be fine. Highly recommended!

Planescape: Torment

Great Beyond Measure

The best way to describe how fantastic Planescape: Torment is would be to point out two things. First: it is almost certainly the best cRPG ever made. Second: the combat is mediocre, the spell animations quickly grow tiring, your character can't die so there's not much tension, various areas of the game are tedious to slog through, other areas of the game are downright painful, the interface is in some cases clunky, and the game's balance is rather off. Why did I list all of these flaws? Because despite them, everybody loves Planescape: Torment, and the fact that it is so stupendous despite these setbacks only serves to further highlight what is amazing about it. In short, Planescape: Torment is a true RPG story. It is often compared to a book, but that is far from correct, because PS:T does two things a book can never do: it lets you TRULY experience the story as the protagonist, and it lets you shape the story and guide the development of the plot. First and foremost I have to mention the fantastic writing and atmosphere, which is the basis of everything. Each word is lovingly crafted, and you'll find yourself looking forward to the long stretches of text that in other games often grow tedious. The world(s) of Planescape are lovingly detailed, and you'll find yourself sucked in even if you are completely unfamiliar with the refreshingly bizarre setting. Second, the game weaves true emotion and revelation into the plot. How many books or games have made you feel regret? Genuine surprise? Guilt? PS:T doesn't just write about these emotions: it lets the player experience them for themselves as a part of the rich narrative. It's not flawless, but it may be perfect, because the flaws honestly don't matter. PS:T is not just an amazing RPG. It's an amazing story and it's a testament to the narrative power that an interactive medium can have. It has never been surpassed and perhaps never will be. Everyone with access to a computer and the ability to read owes it to themselves to experience what Planescape: Torment has to offer.

Soldiers: Heroes of World War II

Fantastic Game

Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 is a fantastic game. The destructable environments, the immense detail in every tank and soldier, and the fast paced tactical combat lead to one of the best WW2 games ever made. The coop mode is probably the best cooperative game I've ever played. Nothing beats playing this game with a friend. If you don't have a friend, though, be careful: it's incredibly difficult. The single player can often be frustrating, considering how much work it is to manage everyone.
