This is the first time that I decided to play such old games, but I've heard and read so much about the series that I decided to play through them no matter what. So, I begun my journey from Akalebeth: the World of Doom. Oh my that was way more difficult than I was ready for, but I managed to finish it after many restarts. The time had come for the real deal - Ultima I: First Age of Darkness. It turned out that playing through Akalebath was worth it, since this one had similar mechanics. The dungeons have some really frustrating enemies, but with enough patience (and luck) I was able to stop the evil Mondain. Quite fun experience overall. Onto Ultima II: Revenge of the Enchantress, oh boy the beginning was painful, but after getting the ship the game got quite enjoyable and thankfully dungeons are optional this time. This is definately the weakest of the three, but it has it's moments. Now Ultima III: Exodus brought some really neat changes to the table. Party combat introduced some nice tactics and I like that there's no space travel part, even though I like the twist at the end with Exodus. In this game I felt that I got much more freedom due to creating a party instead of one character. I was really surprised by the third game, even though ship travel got really annoying due to very rapid wind changes. All in all I enjoyed playing through all three games, but I'm aware that today not that many players have that kind of patience, but I believe the experience is rewarding overall, especially considering how old these titles are.
Blood is an excellent first person shooter. The atmosphere is dense, the weapons are fun and the enemies are very diverse. The only thing that bothered me is the movement, but that just a minor flaw, to the overall great game. Love the sense of humour and the fact that pretty much all of the available weapons (including the pitchfork) are useful throughout the game. The expansions are really good as well and prolong the fun.
Pretty good expansion with more stuff: more great locations to explore, more side stories and characters, more items and so on. The overall quality is good, with combat being the weakest point in my opinion. Still, I would recommend the expansion to anyone who enjoyed the main game.
Carmageddon is still a great game. I had such a blast coming back to it. The cars are fun, so is their destruction, the maps well-made, some are quite crazy in the add-on. My only complains are: the enemies getting destroyed when falling into deep water, which on some maps can end the race right at the beginning and that certain cars are almost indestructible. The music in the original is great, not so much in the add-on, though.
So far, I have not experienced a disappointment when revisiting an old game from the past. Unfortunately, coming back to SimCity 2000 after almost 20 years was my first such experience. I remember it being a very good game, not excellent, but I have enjoyed building, destroying and managing cities in this game. Playing it now was really painful for me, because I was quite excited to play it once more after all these years. The interface is very clunky, I have miss-clicked and destroyed power plants, the colours went full rainbow after alt-tabbing and the game itself got quite unpleasanat overall. It makes me sad that I have good memories of playing it and I could not enjoy it as much as I would like to.
Unfortunately, I encountered a bug that prevented me from finishing any quest from Lord British, but the 1998 version worked just fine. Overall, a very insightful game, brutal at first, but gets more enjoyable with subsequent tries, as I got used to the mechanics. I would advise just exploring freely the dungeons and shops at first, instead of rushing for the Lord British's castle, because of the food management.
This is not a game for everyone. Personally, I was afraid to play it, because of the negative feedback. After finishing it, I'm glad that I backed such an amazing title. I was very surprised, by how well written this game is. There are many small side stories that create just a wonderful world. The characters are well presented and I enjoyed interacting with them. This game really works on the imagination, because of the amount of text. I won't forget such journey for a long time.
I am not fond of adventure games, but for me this game took me off guard. The puzzles are though, but pretty fair most of the time. The story and the humour is simply great, there are soem very memorable characters in this one. The overall atmosphere is intriguing, it gets quite dark as the game goes on.
When I first tried Tyrian I've quit after several levels. This game really tested my reflex and patience. On the second try (after a long break) I managed to complete the game, but some levels are just brutal. What made it worth in the end was the wide variety of weapons and equipment, colorful artstyle and great soundtrack. This is a type of game for people that enjoy fast-pace arcade style gameplay. I'm not that type of person, but I got some enjoyment out of it.
