Resident Evil 3

Best classic RE

Got to this one after playing the previous two, and, while all classic RE games have held up and aged remarkably well, RE3 is easily the best of the three. More varied environments, a lot of new experimentation to keep the game loop engaging, great puzzles, and a pretty good cast of characters. Jill is the only playable in the main game, but the game makes up for it by giving a lot of tools as well as story variations depending on your actions. It also has a fantastic main villain, as Nemesis is extremelly intimidating even all these years later. The graphics did take a hit, though... They don't look as good as RE2, but the rest of the game is still excelent. Played for the first time now, and this is an amazing send off to this chapter of RE, and is my favorite of the classic games.

Resident Evil 2

Like the first, but better

RE2 is a classic among classics, and it's still a very strong and fun game, with lots of tension and a lot of variety that really sell its amazing world. The different scenarios and different ways with which they can be affected also add a lot of replayability. The controls do take a while to get used to if you're not familiar with them, but they are more than enough for you to handle all the threats that come your way. I only had one real issue, at the end of the game, but that was about it. Everything else was smooth sailing! Very good! Recommend. Especially after playing RE1.

Resident Evil

King of Survival Horror is still good

Even in a world post-REmake, the original Resident Evil still works like a dream. Controls are good if you're into tank controls, they don't demand much, and most of the time you're still in for a pretty comfy ride. It lacks the bite it had back in 1996, certainly isn't as scary nowadays, but it's still full of fun set pieces and memorable moments. I really like its more streamlined design when compared to the Remake. Makes it more likely for me to go back for replays. Still fun, still classic. This set the standard, and it still lives up to most of it.

Alisa

Toy-sized terror

Taking cues from past giants, like the original Resident Evil, Alisa is a masterclass of setting design and interesting mechanics, going for the old style of Survival Horror while adding it's own spin into it. The setting is legitimately interesting, and is beautifully put together with great style. Though it's not really SCARY, it gets pretty creepy, and what the monsters may have of goofy, they also have of intimidating. Gameplay wise, the puzzles are pretty good teasers, and the general progression is very efficient and easy to follow. I love how the story takes turns in being creepy and unsettling, while also being fairly silly. Characters are fun to watch, and the whole thing keeps you interested in seeing what's next. The voice acting also adds to the charm, and helps provide this distinct atmosphere. Absolute blast here!

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

Very fun platformer!

Was already a fan of the original game, but this game's different direction makes it varied and interesting. If you're a fan of DKC, or older Rare platformers, then this is your best bet outside of Nintendo. It has great energy, great levels, great music, and a whooper of a challenge at the end.

Tormented Souls

Great Survival Horror

Tormented Souls has very clear inspirations from early Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but it manages to focus on the best aspects of both, with great atmosphere, ambience filled with dread, great puzzles and some fantastic gameplay. The story was fun, taking a page from other horror stories, but had some interesting twists and ideas that really came around in the end. I did feel that some of the gore was a bit much (like, it was more trying to shock than to actually be relevant or impactful). Not to mention, some of the animation in cutscenes was a bit rough, and the voice acting felt like trying too hard, to a point that it felt silly. That said, the game manages to scare and inspire. I'm really looking forward for what the devs come up with next, and hope that they take into consideration the best and worst aspects of this to make something even better. If you like classic Survival Horror action, this is a pretty good one to add to your collection.
