The first impression that it was too simple was wrong. The puzzles get (a lot) more complicated and give you that feeling of accomplishment that we crave. https://pixelloot.com

Starcom: Nexus

micro-review

This is the type of game that you start by being excited to play it, but as time goes by you see more and more problems with it. Although nothing too egregious, the game just becomes boring and a grind, more than anything else. The combat doesn’t help because it’s pretty basic like everything else. Up to you if this is your jam or not. https://pixelloot.com

Sudden Strike 4: Complete Collection

micro-review

One can describe this as: “casual but fun” or “casual *and* fun”. I could go after the unrealistically short spotting (and firing) distance, or how you can cheese most situation by scouting with a rifleman and then shelling them with artillery. But instead, I just choose to enjoy the skirmishes and pretty graphics. https://pixelloot.com

Wasteland 3: Colorado Collection

micro-review

I was very pleasantly surprised by Wasteland 3 seeing how I didn’t like the second. While not one of the best RPGs out there, it manages to be enjoyable and quite a solid RPG. It really manages to do everything pretty well while also not taking itself entirely seriously. All dialogues have voice lines, and the boss music is very catchy. Some quests are time sensitive, a feature implemented very well. And I enjoyed it’s many QoL features. The biggest criticism that I have is that you are discouraged from using weapon and armor mods because you can’t take them off. And you often depend a lot on finding a high-level weapon through RNG; and then the character that has that weapon becomes by far the most valuable member of the group. At the very least, this was my experience on the highest difficulty level. https://pixelloot.com

Phoenix Point: Complete Edition

micro-review

This game can be best summed up as “two steps forward, two steps backwards”. It looks very pretty. There is a lot of player agency. You can mutate or mechanically augment your soldiers, and there is a leveling system for each class. There is a “free aim” system which allows you to aim at specific enemy parts. And a lot of other cool stuff. The DLC that introduces air warfare is so poorly thought that it’s like it had no QA for balancing. There is a bug that makes opponents skip their turns in some instances when you load a tactical map from a save. Upgrades are not really upgrades, but they are more like “sidegrades”; which makes research very underwhelming most of the time. On maximum difficulty, the more successful you are, the game is designed to keep increasing the number of enemies on the tactical maps until the point you will become overwhelmed, which is an incredibly poorly thought mechanic. I hope mods will “fix” it and do another run in the future. https://pixelloot.com

ATOM RPG: Post-apocalyptic indie game

Feels like a cheap Fallout (1 or 2) clone. - No voice lines for dialogues - Lacks a lot of QoL features - Guns have ridiculously short ranges - Bad writing - Character should not be able to just re-roll checks https://pixelloot.com
