Embrace the Uniqueness!

Don't go into this game expecting streamlined, fluid controls. Don't go in expecting a deeply moving experience. Go into this game for the art-style, and embrace the stiff animations and awkward physics! It's an extremely fun game that uses Greek Mythology to tell a fun, if not generic, tale of yet another Greek Hero. I have never played a game quite like this. You get to control the hero and choose your own path as you go fight mythological creatures and encounter Greek gods and demi-gods. Help them, or fight with them. Break the laws of Olympus and incur their wrath? Or do their bidding and earn their blessing? But, for real though, the art style is the highlight of this game. It's gorgeous! The amount of detail despite the simplicity of it all is just astounding. It really is like watching a story play out on the side of a Greek vase, much like watching Disney's Hercules when the sisters sang on the side of the vases. I can't recommend this game enough. Again, if you want a metroidvania that has smooth movements, or a deep story with plot twists and all, go somewhere else. (My I recommend Hollow Knight??? Great Game!!!) But, if you want some fun, light-hearted gameplay with some Greek Mythology thrown in then look no further. Get this game.

Serpent in the Staglands

Stop Whining. The Game is Fine.

Ok, so despite the many bad reviews I've seen about this game I bought it anyway. The overall rating at the moment is 4 out of 5, and that should mean something. I looked at the pictures, and watched the video, so I was prepared for the game to look like it was presented. I can't complain about graphics that I've already seen. I think it looks great. It's exactly what I expected... Pixels and all. It reminds me of an older game, and that's what drew me to it. Now, so far the game-play has far surpassed what I was looking for. I was not expecting the depth of the magic system with it's actually writing out incantations, or the crafting, or the level of exploration within an area. There are many very detailed descriptions about many of the things around you, so it increases the immersion level greatly. Now, the biggest complaint I see about this game is the difficulty... All I can say is that I grew up playing games that were more difficult than this, and much less rewarding. So the starting stats are low and the beginning enemies are strong... So? You're character is a god that has dawned mortality and is very fragile compared to what he normally is. For me it makes sense that he should be this way, as it makes you feel the challenge he has brought on himself in risking his existence to figure out the issues he is facing. There are detailed instructions about where to go, and who to talk to... And there's no pre-written Journal like Oblivion. You get to write down your own notes and keep track of things that way in the Journal you are giveen. That's freakin awesome! It just adds to the immersion when you look at it that way. If you are letting the details that are intended to immerse you into the game world annoy you because it feels like you have to work to achieve anything, then this game is not for you. Go buy yourself one of the more recent Pokemon games. They'll hold your hand and comfort you, and make you feel powerful.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - Collector's Edition upgrade

Great Extras. Great Option.

Yeah, the price seems steep for just music and digital extras, but honestly I would end up paying more for a CD or MP3 of an album, so you'd actually get more for your money buying this at full price. However, I got this on sale, and I love everything that's in it. I have one of the HD wallpapers on my PC right now. Having the items sold separately works well for me, as I have bought some games that I didn't care for the soundtrack of, or thought the wallpapers and whatnot were poorly chosen. I was glad to pick this up on sale, separate from the game, which allowed me to be sure of what I was getting before I spent more money on frivolous things I wouldn't have enjoyed. Great content.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

A Short, Sweet, Dark, Story.

First off, excellent game. The atmosphere was immersive and the music was perfect at every moment. A handful of scary jumpy moments, but nothing to keep you awake at night. Mostly just serene, yet eerie, surroundings. The voice acting was great, and the story was deep and honestly left me speechless for a while. The ONLY draw-back is the length of the game. I can't recommend paying full price. Get it on sale if you can. It took somewhere between 3-5 hours for me, I didn't really count. Fairly linear story progression, though you have the freedom to go where you want. Do not go into this game expecting extremely difficult puzzles or anything. The most difficult puzzles were minuscule compared to something like the Myst Series. But, each puzzle makes perfect sense in it's placement and part of the story line. As a whole, I loved the experience of the game. I got it on sale, and I feel it was money very well spent.

Wizard of Legend

One Issue Remains...

This game is absolutely amazing. Especially with the new updates which added a new dungeon. The music and atmosphere is wonderful. There is a tone of stuff to collect that all impact your runs through the dungeons. The difficulty is just right. It doesn't cater to those who give up easily, but it is possible to progress more as you collect more. However, the reason I give this game 4 instead of 5 stars is the game's one big glaring error: You can only equip one relic at the beginning of each run! Now, I understand some may feel that this keeps the game balanced. I can understand that reasoning, but I don't agree. There are 3 categories of relics... Why not allow only one of each type to be equipped before a run? Let the player put all those relics we are supposed to be paying good (in game) money for to use. There are supposedly relics that combine and become stronger... Well the chances of me combining two relics that are supposed to is very slim, as I have one of three categories to choose from, and only one relic is coming with me, period. There are tons of relics. Tons. The game encourages buying multiples and trying different "combinations" but why pay for a new relic when I have another relic that has a better perk? I've stagnated into using the one I think is best. I have no real incentive to buy new relics since I have to only choose one. I would be more likely to invest in more relics if I knew I could at least equip one of each type before a run. Again, get the game! It is fantastic! However, if this one detail could be fixed the game would be Perfect. Many, many comments below express the same frustration. If/When that happens this becomes a 5 star review with literally nothing bad to say. Great, great game.

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4

Pure Magic

If you are a Harry Potter fan then you will absolutely love this game. It brings out all the best that Harry Potter had to offer a video game world, and brought out the best combination of humor and creativity that only LEGO could bring together. The music is spot on, the nostalgia factor is there if you have read the books or watched the movies, and the story is artfully told. It's a little dated, so don't expect full 360 camera maneuverability, or a super large free roaming world like LEGO Lord of the Rings. But, it's a solid game none the less. It's especially awesome if you can find it on sale!

The Count Lucanor

Brothers Grim, eat your hearts out!

This is an amazing game. The atmosphere is well developed and you aren't restricted by a stern linear path. You are free to go where you will, and that's half the fun: seeing what is possible. I feel the developers did a great job sticking to their ideals of what this game should be, and it paid off big time. The cast of characters is perfect, and the over-use of gore fits the feel of the dark and dreary theme, but doesn't overshadow the lightheartedness of the fairy-tale aspect the game shoots for. The music is perfect for the game, and the sound effects are great as well. (Wear headphones and hear the footsteps in the darkness cross slowly from one ear to the other, and peel your eyes for who exactly may be lurking just out of site... Hear the cries of ghastly creatures roaming in the darkness seeking a snack... Hear the whispers of the Count's servants as they wander the corridors) The controls are simple and easy. The only complain I had is that I was unsure how exactly to eat food that I had in my inventory. You have to go to your inventory, highlight the food, PRESS DOWN and select the "eat" option. Don't know why but there was no mention of pressing down in the tutorial so it was a bit confusing. Other than that it was a solid game. I have read complaints about it having practically no replay value, and that's just not true. I just viewed one of the 5 possible endings, and I'm ready to go right back to it and figure out what I can do differently. Playing The Count Lucanor is the video game world equivalent of curling up on a chair and reading a good book on a rainy day. Get this game. You will not regret it.

Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition

If the price is right.

I love this game. The music is fun, and the story line is interesting. (Keep in mind this game is meant to poke loving, lighthearted jabs at Dungeons and Dragons and you'll be fine.) It is indeed a grind-fest, but the best kind. You do feel accomplished when you finally finish a mission, or level up, or unlock some new ability. And, honestly, i love that it is from the perspective of people playing a table-top game. However, I feel like this game would be much better in the mobile version... Something you whip your phone out for and grind a bit, turn it off and come back to it later. It's not really something that keeps me glued to my computer screen for hours on end. But, I still recommend this game, especially if you get it on sale. It's a fun experience.

Hard West

Wild West Strategy... Need I say more?

This game has gotten some pretty mixed reviews. However, I think it's important when critiquing a game that your expectations not necessarily come into play. I bought this game because it is a strategy game that embraces a western theme, and in my opinion they nailed it. Yes, you are mostly outnumbered, but there are various difficulty levels if you are struggling with certain levels. Honestly, sometimes I feel overpowered against 10 opponents when I have more than 2 in my party. But, again, adjust the difficulty to fit your desires. Are you trying to enjoy a story that takes place in the western setting? Play on easy and enjoy the voice acting and atmosphere! Want an intensely difficult game you can brag about beating later on? Play through on a higher difficulty and do just that! But, as far as game-play goes, the only real complaint that I have is the in-between battles portion of the game. Sometimes I get confused about where to go next, especially if I accidentally click something and skip the message. I think directing the player through those scenarios could be done a little cleaner. But, other than that, I really enjoy the customization and strategic variances that go into the fighting portion of the game. The Deck Building is something very unique in my opinion, and I love trying different combinations of cards to bring out the best in certain characters. The music is fantastic as well. I highly recommend this game!

Zombie Night Terror

Watch the world around you fall apart.

Guide your zombie horde to destroy mankind. Upgrades, interactive world, make your own levels even! This game has everything, and you don't want to miss it. Not to mention that the soundtrack is something straight out of the 80's and sounds wonderful. Imagine Michael Jackson's "Thriller" only techno-vised and remastered. It's great.
