The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won’t be able to see them.
You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.
Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.
Still, the discoveries won’t happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul’s supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.
Explore and interact with the beautiful yet ominous world of Red Creek Valley, which was created with the use of revolutionary photogrammetry technology that allows for nearly photorealistic environments.
Communicate with the dead and see how they died in order to gather clues that help you piece together the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance -- and the fate of his family.
Experience, in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye, and horror fiction, all of it inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and H. P. Lovecraft.
Conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although there are a few scary bits in the game, players will have no need for sedatives. Our game is less about terror and more about clammy unease.

So when I opened the page for this upgrade one of the first things I noticed was that there were two review for only one star. Both focused on the idea that it was a shame to see GOG selling extras for the game that should be included for free. And both, from my perspective, intimated that GOG had taken part of the extra content for the game and separated it out to make more money.
However this division of material is mirrored on Steam, the only other download option listed on the Astronauts page for the game. It seems likely then that this is a secondary package offered by the publisher rather than an arbitrary division on GOG or Steams part.
I always like to see more freebies included, but even if GOG made the choice to divide off this material it’s not the worst given that this content isn’t free elsewhere. And from my limited perspective I would rather see an upgrade package then two different versions of the game. With an upgrade package, if I love the base game I don’t have to feel like I missed out by not buying the collector’s edition, I can always just buy the extras later.
I concur with MrComics. Separated goodies offer two additional choices: a) buying the game for a lower price than it might have been with the goodies included, and b) buying only the goodies. The critics seem to forget that the "free" goodies they got before were *of course* calculated into the bundled price. The only change is that it's more transparent now.
As I have bought many games only for their goodies (especially the soundtracks), I like the separation. And because the game itself sadly doesn't come for Linux, I have no interest in the game itself.
Yeah, the price seems steep for just music and digital extras, but honestly I would end up paying more for a CD or MP3 of an album, so you'd actually get more for your money buying this at full price. However, I got this on sale, and I love everything that's in it. I have one of the HD wallpapers on my PC right now.
Having the items sold separately works well for me, as I have bought some games that I didn't care for the soundtrack of, or thought the wallpapers and whatnot were poorly chosen. I was glad to pick this up on sale, separate from the game, which allowed me to be sure of what I was getting before I spent more money on frivolous things I wouldn't have enjoyed.
Great content.
This game uses photogrammetry to accurately represent real objects in 3D environments. It's hands down the best looking game I've ever played. Rocks have interesting mossy growth and cracks. Buildings have stains wear from the elements. It's just a level of detail I've never seen duplicated anywhere else in the medium. The wallpapers are simply stunning because of it.
The music is fantastic. It's dripping with atmosphere, but it never goes over the top. I listen to it all the time while working. It's unsettling enough that it keeps me alert and focused, but it's not distracting. It's a great soundtrack.
The digital maps are really cool, but don't look at them until you've played the game, since they have spoilers.
I got this for free since I pre-ordered the game, but I think it would be well worth the money for the soundtrack alone.
most if not all the games that I own have the soundtrack included as part of the goodies and benefits of buying from GOG what went wrong here it used to be part of GOG to be able to get things like this for free as part of your games. heck its even stated in their jewtube page trailer of what GOG stands for that they would give you pictures, posters, sound tracks ans such for free as part of the game, why is this even being offered separate. GOG is changing and not for the better.
